Summary

A corded 1/2-sheet finishing sander with a 4-1/2" × 9" pad and a 4,000–10,000 OPM variable-speed dial, built to leave a smooth final surface on cabinets, furniture and millwork rather than strip stock. Check the price and the paper before you buy: it is not a stock-removal tool, and several specialty retailers list it far above what it is worth.

Strengths

  • The 4,000–10,000 OPM dial is the reason to pick the V over the fixed-speed BO4900.
  • It takes both clamped half sheets and hook-and-loop paper.
  • Dust is pulled through the pad, and the port accepts a shop vacuum.
  • Owners on the Home Depot listing call it quiet and low-vibration, with easy paper changes.
  • Makita publishes a full parts breakdown, so brushes and switches are service items.

Weaknesses

  • No instrumented third-party test of this exact model exists, so every performance figure is manufacturer-declared.
  • Specialist tool retailers list it at $299–$461, well above the ~$90–110 class the tool belongs to.
  • The US vibration figure of 5 m/s² cannot be reconciled with the EU ≤2.5 m/s² figure.
  • Net weight is documented as both 6 lbs and 6.2 lbs for the same model.
  • The included paper dust bags are disposable, and thin cuts and paper clog quickly.
  • It is a finishing sander, not a stock-removal tool, and no removal rate is published.

Variable speed and what it’s for

The “V” is the variable-speed version. Makita’s BO4900 and BO4901 are fixed at 10,000 OPM; the BO4900V dials from 4,000 to 10,000, and all three share the same pad, paper sizes and 289 mm length. The trigger is a plain on/off switch, so speed is set on the dial, not by trigger pressure. Makita positions the tool for cabinetmakers, boat builders and furniture makers — finish work, not deck stripping. No material-removal rate is published, and no independent lab has measured orbits at each dial setting.

Dust collection and running costs

Dust is pulled through the pad into the supplied paper bag or into a shop vacuum through the hose port; Makita UK pairs it with an extractor such as the VC2201MX1. The bag is a consumable sold five to a pack (193526-0), and the manual says to empty it when it is about half full, switching off and unplugging first. The tool takes 4-1/2" × 11" half sheets or 4-1/2" × 9-1/8" hook-and-loop paper, and a 3120-grit sheet is in the box. There is no subscription and no proprietary battery to lock you in.

Vibration, noise and weight

Two different vibration figures circulate for the same model: Makita USA lists 5 m/s², while Makita EU and a Canadian distributor declare ≤2.5 m/s² with a 1.5 m/s² K factor on a metal plate, tested to EN60745. The US figure’s test condition is not stated, so treat the lower number as unconfirmed rather than averaging the two. Sound pressure is 74 dB(A) with 3 dB(A) uncertainty (Makita UK); one Canadian distributor says 71 dB(A). Net weight is listed as 6 lbs on the US page but 2.8 kg (6.2 lbs) in the manual, and EU documentation says 2.7 kg — a real same-model discrepancy.

Parts and repairs

Repairability is above average for a corded sander. Makita publishes a full parts breakdown listing the 115 V field (634461-8), brush holder (643923-5), armature, housing, knob and switch parts, and sells them as service items. Because the motor is brushed and the tool is double-insulated with a polarized plug, a damaged cord means replacing the cord assembly, not just the plug. Wear items over the years are abrasive paper, dust bags, the power switch, carbon brushes and the pad surface. The US warranty is 1 year; Makita UK runs a 3-year promotion that does not apply to US purchases.

Is it worth it?

At roughly $90–110 — the class this sander competes in — it is a strong value: variable speed that matters for finish work, dual paper formats, through-the-pad dust collection and a published parts list. At $111–160 it is fair; at $161–250 it is weak against random-orbit sanders with better dust capture. Above $250 it is hard to defend, and several specialty retailers list it well past that: The Woodworking Shop at $299 (2026), Federated Tool at $461 CAD list and $369 CAD (2026), and Toolmarts at $299 (2026). Those look like legacy MSRP and Canadian-dollar numbers rather than US street prices. Pair it with a vacuum and buy it at hardware-store pricing.

Which model this is

The BO4900V is the US 120 V, 2.9 A corded version; Makita sells a 240 V, 330 W BO4900V in the UK under the same model number, so match the voltage before buying. It is not the cordless Makita sanders or the heavier 600 W Makita 9046. The US listing is ASIN B0000789HT.
