Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A hardwired 2K (2560 × 1920) Wi-Fi video doorbell that records to an included 32 GB microSD card without a mandatory subscription, with person and motion alerts, two-way talk and a built-in downlight. Check your wiring and app before you buy: it needs 16–24 VAC, Alexa support was withdrawn on October 5, 2026, and its person detection is mixed in real use.

Strengths

  • Better night video and HDR than the older 1080p Lorex, with a clear enough picture to identify a cat and speak to a delivery driver in real-world tests.
  • 32 GB microSD comes pre-inserted, so event clips are possible without subscribing.
  • Supplied chime power kit and wedges make installation feasible on existing 16–24 VAC systems.
  • Built-in downlight, prerecorded visitor responses, optional warning siren and local microSD storage.
  • At least one owner reported good operation for about a year without the crashes others described.

Weaknesses

  • Person detection produces false alerts: a controlled review repeatedly classified a cat as a person, and another tester saw person alerts from a walker far from the entrance.
  • Bell-press reboot after about a year: a January 2024 owner reported the device restarting when a visitor rang; others reported minutes of offline time after button presses even after transformer or chime replacement.
  • An iFixit inspection of a B451AJ-family unit found a swollen internal lithium backup cell, housing separation and pitted power-board contacts. That is one documented mechanism, not proof of a universal defect.
  • Storage can corrupt and the device can freeze; one owner reported success after Lorex support supplied a firmware file installed through a PC client.
  • No published failure rate, recall or mean time to failure for B451AJD-E.

Detection and smart-home limits

Alexa integration is no longer supported for B451AJ as of October 5, 2026, despite old manuals and retailer descriptions. Google Assistant appears in older marketing, but current availability is not verified for every firmware and app combination. There is no HomeKit or Siri support. Person and motion alerts are adjustable but not perfect under all lighting and angles, and alerts can be missed during a reboot or disconnect.

Reliability and owner reports

Owners describe intermittent offline behavior, blurry optics developing over time, and app issues. One April 2025 owner reported image blur worsening over ownership with frequent offline events, with support recommending a reboot; another reported milder blur after about four years without direct sunlight. Causes were not verified. A July 2025 owner reported a corrupted SD card, freeze and chime failure shortly after installation, later fixed by a manually installed firmware file from Lorex support. Support outcomes vary: one July 2025 owner found the firmware intervention genuinely useful, while other owners reported transformer recommendations without a committed fix, or a simple reboot suggestion.

Running costs

Standard local microSD recording needs no subscription: $0 per year. No required annual filter or battery subscription. Electricity is not established: no authenticated exact-model measured or published normal wattage was found. Illustration only, not a measured draw: at an assumed continuous 2 W, 24 hours a day for 365 days is 17.52 kWh per year, or $3.50 at an assumed $0.20 per kWh; at an assumed 5 W it is 43.8 kWh per year, or $8.76. Transformer inefficiencies and the user’s router or recorder are excluded. A failing or full microSD may need replacement, but average annual replacements and cost are not quantified. The preinstalled card makes recurring consumable spend potentially $0 while functional; an optional 256 GB OEM card is a one-time upgrade at $134.99, not a required annual expense.

Parts and consumables

  • 32 GB surveillance microSD: one already installed, so initial spend is $0. Supports up to 256 GB. Lorex US listed a 32 GB card (WDD032G1P0C) at $24.99, a 64 GB card (ACCSD64G2W-F) at $49.99, and a 256 GB card (ACCSD256G2W-F) at $134.99 in October 2026. The 256 GB model is listed as compatible with B451AJD. Cards are wear items; replacement depends on write volume, temperature and errors, not a fixed interval.
  • Optional Wi-Fi plug-in chime (AZTWFCHM2-B): $53.99 sale, $59.99 regular, wall-powered, supports the B451AJ series. Needed only where no suitable wired indoor chime exists.
  • 16 V 30 VA transformer: not in the box, needed only when wiring lacks adequate 16–24 VAC supply. Home Depot listed Defiant 18000044 at $19.97 and Newhouse Hardware 30TR at $17.70. Standard home-electrical parts, not proprietary Lorex SKUs. Hire a qualified electrician if unsure; labor cost is additional and not established.
  • Internal backup lithium cell: documented in one iFixit disassembly, but not listed as a user-replaceable consumable. No approved spare SKU, price or replacement schedule. A damaged or swollen cell requires qualified attention, not consumer DIY soldering.

Is it worth it?

Visible US asking offers, October 2026, exact B451AJD-E; check stock, condition, tax, freight and seller:

  • Lorex US product page: marked available by contacting the team directly, no reliable direct checkout total. A catalog feed showed $127.99 in stock at Lorex, conflicting with the public page; do not treat $127.99 as confirmed purchasable.
  • Lorex PRO business page: white B451AJD-E at $118.99 versus $169.99 crossed out, with add to cart, but partner login may be required. This is B2B pricing, not confirmed consumer availability.
  • Best Buy exact listing: no longer available in new condition; an indexed page shows $170.04 through a BrandsMartUSA marketplace seller, inconsistent inventory.
  • Focus Camera exact B451AJD-E: $199.99, with checkout not conclusively established.
  • Consumer Reports quoted an approximately $149.99 Northern Tool + Equipment merchant offer, without verifying current stock.

Asking offers fall roughly between $119 and $200, but no statistically representative usual street price or completed-order history was found. The old ~$179.99 seed figure is not a 2026 observation.

Buying thresholds: under $75 delivered, new, with a credible seller and return window, it might be worthwhile if Lorex Classic is already in use and Alexa loss, detection limits and age are acceptable. At $75–$100 delivered it is conditional; compare the Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi 5MP, listed at $97.99 sale and $139.99 crossed out on the official US store, with chime. Above $100–$120, generally skip this older B451AJD unless it is required for a verified existing Lorex system; the Wyze Wired Video Doorbell v2 was $59.98 at Home Depot with 2K and microSD.

It needs a 16–24 VAC doorbell supply.
