Summary
A 1080p/30 USB-A webcam with a detachable privacy shutter, dual microphones and a two-year warranty — the mature default for video calls. Check the 30 fps cap and the fixed 78° field of view before you buy: if you want 1080p/60 or 4K, shop elsewhere.
Strengths
- Wirecutter’s testers blind-ranked the C920 platform first among six webcams tested, beating newer and more expensive models.
- CNN Underscored named it the best overall webcam of 2021 and reaffirmed it in 2022; Tom’s Guide made it Editor’s Choice.
- Plug-and-play UVC across Windows, macOS and ChromeOS, with Logi Tune for zoom, mic and firmware updates.
- Two omnidirectional microphones are clear enough for calls.
- A decade of owner and repair documentation backs the design.
Weaknesses
- The sensor is capped at 1080p/30 — there is no 60 fps mode at any resolution.
- The 78° field of view is fixed; wider or narrower framing means a digital crop in Logi Tune.
- Autofocus hunting is the most common owner complaint, and it shows up most on aging units.
- Microphones are adequate for calls, not for recording: Tom’s Guide calls them “very good but not great.”

Image quality and autofocus
Independent coverage is strong but old. Wirecutter’s webcam guide, republished by Engadget, had seven staffers blind-rank image quality across six tested webcams, 19 evaluated in total; the C920 platform ranked first, with testers citing crisp 1080p/30 video and the best autofocus and auto white balance in the test. CNN Underscored named the C920s the best overall webcam of 2021 and reaffirmed it in a 2022 roundup, citing picture quality in bright and dim light. Tom’s Guide’s February 2024 update gave it Editor’s Choice. None of these reviews publish lab-grade measurements.
The autofocus is the weak point owners actually hit. A macOS owner reported random blurring on Teams and FaceTime and fixed it by disabling autofocus in a third-party Camera Settings app; PCGamesN’s reviewer noted the autofocus “can sometimes struggle for a few seconds” if you are not centered when the call starts. iFixit documents a lens-ring misalignment fix for blurry or stuck-macro-focus units. Nobody has published a failure rate, so treat this as a known annoyance rather than a defect. Cable wear and failed USB controllers are the common faults on used units.
Privacy shutter and build
The C920s is the C920 plus a shutter. Tom’s Guide states the only difference between the two is the removable privacy shutter. The shutter flips over the lens and detaches completely, which some listings do not make clear. iFixit describes the housing as polycarbonate with a reinforced metal-clamp hinge and a multi-element glass lens; the universal clip carries the ¼-inch tripod thread. The original C920 dates to 2012 and is being discontinued, so the C920s is effectively the current privacy-shutter option in the family.
Microphones, software and compatibility
The two omnidirectional mics are described by Tom’s Guide as “very good but not great” — adequate for calls, not for content creation. Setup is plug-and-play UVC on Windows, macOS and ChromeOS; advanced features like Logi Tune controls and software mic enablement may be limited on non-Windows platforms. Logi Tune’s zoom and field-of-view sliders are digital crops of the fixed 78° image, not optical changes. Firmware updates also run through Logi Tune. Linux is not on the retailer compatibility list, but owners run the C920 family on Linux with a community driver.
Is it worth it?
Logitech’s US store listed the C920s at $59.99, marked down from $69.99, when checked on 2026-10-20; Newegg Insider listed the same $59.99 in August 2026. B&H Photo lists it at $69.99 with a $10 cart coupon, and Tom’s Guide noted $69.99 at Logitech in its 2024 update. At $60 or less it is a strong default for video calls; from $61 to $75 it is fair-to-good if you specifically want the shutter over the identical C920. Above $75 the 30 fps ceiling and fixed field of view start to hurt: newer 1080p/60 and 4K options like the Logitech Brio and MX Brio enter the comparison. Owners on r/buildapcsales argued in 2024 that even a $50 street price was hard to justify next to the Razer Kiyo (1080p/60) or the AnkerWork C310 (4K/30), and T3’s 2024 review points to the Anker PowerConf C200 — 2K, adjustable field of view, privacy shutter — as a same-price rival.
Which model this is
This page covers the C920s PRO HD Webcam, M/N 960-001257: the privacy-shutter variant of the long-running C920/C920s family. The original C920 (2012) has no shutter; the C920s adds the detachable flip shutter. The C920e (960-001360) is a separate business-oriented variant with a non-detachable shutter and a three-year warranty — do not confuse it. Treat the C920, C920s, C922 and C920e as related but distinct models.
