Summary

A two-piece seasoned cast-iron combo cooker: a deep skillet base with a lid that doubles as a shallow skillet, at home on the stove, in the oven, on a grill or over a campfire. It is the same cooker as Lodge’s standard LCC3 with an engraved cabin design, so check which one you want before paying the extra.

Strengths

  • Two pieces work as a deep pot, a shallow pan and a griddle.
  • WIRED’s food writer and a Modernist Cuisine chef both rate it for home bread baking.
  • Seasoned with vegetable oil, no PFAS, and made in the USA.
  • Owners call it the most-used thing in their kitchen, for bread, eggs, steak and camping.
  • Non-stick performance improves as the seasoning builds.

Weaknesses

  • The skillet-handle lid is handier for bread than general Dutch oven cooking; a knob is easier to grab.
  • Lodge publishes no oven maximum; the 500°F figure comes from Consumer Reports.
  • Lodge says its pans are not perfectly flat, so they are not recommended for glass-top stoves.
  • As cast iron it needs drying and oiling after every wash, and it can rust if you skip it.
  • The Wanderlust edition costs $79.95 at Lodge against $69.95 for the identical standard LCC3.

What the makers and tests say

No lab test of the LCCWND or the standard LCC3 was found. WIRED’s food writer has baked in it for years and praises the dark cast iron for absorbing and radiating heat, with a tapered bottom that helps shape loaves. Francisco Migoya of Modernist Cuisine called it a vast improvement over a baking stone or steel.

Bread, camping and everyday use

The shallow half is the trick for bread: it is easy to lower dough in, and the deep half goes on top to trap steam. Owners use it the other way too, as a deep pot for stews and roasts or a griddle for eggs and steak. Reddit owners describe it as the most versatile pot they own, good enough to have replaced far more expensive pans, and as their favorite camping cookware because the lid doubles as a skillet. Rough patches left by sand casting smooth out as you cook and re-season.

Care and upkeep

Lodge says hand wash, dry and oil. Never soak it, dry it fully to avoid rust, and wipe on a thin coat of neutral oil after each wash. For a fresh seasoning, Wirecutter suggests heating the pan to 500°F, wiping on a thin layer of oil and baking it inverted for an hour. There are no consumables and no parts to replace; the running cost is a little cooking oil.

Lodge lists the Wanderlust LCCWND at $79.95 and the standard LCC3 at $69.95, both on its own site; the extra $10 buys only the engraved cabin design, not different cooking. Hearth & Patina, Lehman’s and WebstaurantStore all list the LCC3 at $59.90. WIRED reported the LCC3 at $40 to $50 in 2021, and Wirecutter listed it at $60 in 2023. Below $50 it is excellent value; at the Wanderlust price you are paying for the design, and the standard cooker does the same job for less.
