Summary

A two-piece cast iron set that works as a Dutch oven, shallow skillet and griddle, made in the USA and ready to use out of the box. It is best known as a sourdough bread baker, but check your stovetop first: Lodge says it works on any surface, while one retailer warns against glass-top use.

Strengths

  • One set covers a Dutch oven, shallow skillet and griddle, so no separate cloche or griddle is needed.
  • WIRED’s food writer named it the best baking tool and praised the crust and crumb it produced.
  • A Modernist Cuisine chef called it a vast improvement over baking stones and steels for bread.
  • Pre-seasoned and ready to use, and made in the USA.
  • The two pieces seal tightly and trap steam, which helps build the crust.
  • Owners on Lodge’s Australia page rate it highly for sourdough.

Weaknesses

  • Lehman’s warns Lodge bottoms are not perfectly flat and advises against glass-top stoves, which clashes with Lodge’s claim of universal compatibility.
  • At 12.85 lb it is heavy to lift and move, especially with a loaf inside.
  • It is raw cast iron: hand wash, dry immediately and re-oil, or it will rust.
  • Re-seasoning needs vegetable oil, not butter, margarine or solid shortening like Crisco.
  • No independent instrumented test of this exact model exists, so performance claims rest on one review and owner impressions.
  • Retailers price it as high as €120 in the EU and $299.95 AUD in Australia.

Bread baking and what it does

WIRED’s Joe Ray reviewed the set as a bread-baking tool and called it the best baking tool, reporting loaves with a dark crust and springy interior from the Jim Lahey no-knead method. Francisco Migoya, head chef at Modernist Cuisine, told the same review that the combo cooker was a vast improvement over baking stones or steels for home bread, because the dense, black iron absorbs and radiates heat better than a lighter Dutch oven, and the round, tapered bottom cradles the loaf. The shallow piece doubles as the lid and as a griddle or frying pan, so you can brown on the stove and finish in the oven with one set.

Stovetop and glass-top caution

Lodge’s US page says the set is compatible with any stovetop including induction, and with the oven, grill and campfire. Lehman’s, which sells it, adds a warning that Lodge items do not have perfectly flat bottoms and should not be used on glass-top stoves. If your range has a glass top, take that caution seriously before you buy. Nothing in the available reports says whether flatness varies from piece to piece or by production run.

Care, upkeep and repairs

Care is hand wash, dry immediately, and a light coat of vegetable oil after every wash; a little soap is fine when needed. Lehman’s advises against butter, margarine or solid vegetable oil such as Crisco for re-seasoning. There are no moving parts, electronics or consumables beyond cooking oil, and no parts channel specific to the LCC3. Lodge describes the iron as cast to last for generations and links to its Made Right Warranty, though the terms are not spelled out on the product page.

Is it worth it?

Lodge lists the set at $69.95 (Lodge, 2026). Lehman’s lists it at $59.90 and Guys Lumber at $64.99, while Grill Parts America and Clatskanie Builders Supply are higher at $83.02 and $79.99. WIRED reported a $40–50 range at Lodge, REI and Target in 2021. The value is strongest for US buyers paying $60–80; at €120 in the EU and $299.95 AUD in Australia it is a harder sell against local cast iron.

Which model this is

This page covers the Lodge 3.2 Quart Cast Iron Combo Cooker, model LCC3, the US version sold under the Sourdough Favorite badge. Some retailers round the capacity to 3 qt and the EU listing gives 2.84 L, but these are the same two-piece set. Do not confuse it with Lodge’s single Dutch ovens or other combo cookers.
