Summary
A mechanical dog-operated drinking valve that attaches to a garden hose or outdoor spigot, supplying fresh water only while the dog presses the stem. Check your faucet’s threading and anti-siphon compatibility before buying, and be aware that a continuous pressurized connection can leak.
Strengths
- No reservoir to refill, no pump to plug in, and no proprietary filters.
- Owners report dogs learning to use it quickly, some within days, using peanut butter or food on the tip.
- Long-term owner accounts describe units working for years with occasional screen cleaning and no rust.
- Simple hand-screw installation when threads match the faucet.
- A Chewy owner reports their Boxer actively prefers the L100 over a regularly replenished bowl.
Weaknesses
- Thread specification conflict: Lixit says half-inch pipe fitting, Miller says 3/4-inch GHT; verify your faucet’s actual thread before buying.
- Both manufacturers warn it will not work on anti-siphon faucets.
- Owners report threaded-connection leaks across multiple hose bibs, sometimes persisting through washer replacements.
- A Chewy owner reported water flow too low for a large dog after a walk.
- Water inside freezes in cold weather; the unit has no freeze-proof rating.
- Direct sun on exposed hoses can make the first water warm on hot days.

Installation and compatibility
The L100 screws directly onto a compatible outdoor spigot. Lixit’s product copy calls out a standard half-inch pipe fitting or hose, while Miller’s later seller page states standard 3/4-inch Garden Hose Thread. These do not describe interchangeable thread systems, so verify your faucet’s male thread and the unit’s female connection before buying adapters or forcing assembly. Both Lixit and Miller explicitly warn that the L100 will not work on anti-siphon faucets. A Chewy owner reports managing to seal one with a particular backflow preventer, but an individual success does not override the manufacturer exclusion. Do not remove or bypass required backflow protection.
Training and dog acceptance
Hand-screw the unit onto a compatible spigot, turn on the water, and demonstrate by pressing the valve to make a stream. Some dogs respond to food applied to the tip. One Chewy owner reported all their dogs were reliably using it by day five. Others report dogs that ignore it entirely, including a French bulldog using it while a pit bull ignored it. Keep a separate monitored water source during training and whenever the dog has not reliably learned the valve.
Leaks, repairs and running costs
The L100 has no power, pump, filters, or subscription. Running costs are limited to the water it consumes. At an assumed one gallon per day and an illustrative $0.02/gallon combined utility rate, that is about $7.30/year. At half a gallon per day it would be about $3.65/year. A leak changes the math: one gallon of wasted water per day adds $7.30/year at the same rate. No measured valve-drip benchmark was found.
No Lixit-specific OEM replacement part numbers were found. A standard 3/4-inch GHT female-hose flat rubber washer may fit if the L100 has the Miller-specified 3/4-inch GHT seat; Ace sells a 10-pack of generic hose washers (item 74129) for $2.99. Miller offers a one-year manufacturing-defect warranty with proof of purchase. Chewy advertises 365-day returns; Ace typically lists 30-day returns on eligible items.
Is it worth it?
At $13.99 from Lixit’s own store or $12.99 from Ace Hardware (October 2026), the L100 is inexpensive. Chewy lists it at approximately $15.30 to $16.33, and Walmart at $16.01. Miller Manufacturing direct lists its original L100 at $17.99. The unit is worth it if you have a compatible outdoor spigot, a dog that learns to press a stem, and you accept the risk of a pressurized connection that can leak. If you need indoor use, a faucet with anti-siphon protection, or a dog that will not use the stem, look elsewhere.
Which model this is
This page covers the Lixit L-100 dog faucet waterer, maker SKU 30-0840-001, UPC 076711008406. It is also sold as the Miller Manufacturing L100 and listed by Ace Hardware under manufacturer code L100CA. It is not the L70, a bottle nipple, or an electric recirculating fountain.
