LG gram Book 16: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-19
Summary
The LG gram Book 16 (16U55U-H.AU77U3) is a 16-inch touchscreen ultraportable whose main complaints are the processor’s weak value, a 26-hour battery claim that only covers video playback, 16 GB of soldered RAM and the absence of Thunderbolt 4. Running costs are effectively zero, with no consumables or mandatory subscription. It is strong value near the $799–$900 sale prices seen through 2026 and weak value above $1,100.
Common problems and fixes
- 16 GB of RAM is soldered and cannot be upgraded — there is no memory-upgrade path, so buyers who need more must choose the 32 GB 16U55U-H.AU87U1 instead. [4][10]
- No Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 — the two USB-C ports carry DisplayPort Alt mode and Power Delivery only, which limits fast external drives and docks. [4]
Parts and consumables
No replaceable parts or consumables reported. The 16 GB of RAM is soldered, and ordinary Windows use needs no filter, cartridge or subscription; the internal battery, 65 W USB-C adapter and SSD are occasional service items rather than consumables. [4][9]
Yearly running cost
A typical owner spends nothing per year to run the laptop: no filters, cartridges or mandatory subscription are required for ordinary offline Windows use. gram chat Cloud AI is free for the first year after registration and optional paid thereafter, and Microsoft 365 and McAfee arrive as 30-day trials that can be declined. An electricity figure cannot be computed from the available sources.
When it is a good buy
- $799–$900 is strong value: Best Buy and LG ran the exact model at $799.99 in August 2026 and $849.99 in July 2026, after launch sales at $899.99, for a 16-inch 120 Hz touchscreen with a 77 Wh battery and a second M.2 slot. [4][8]
- Above $1,100 the case thins: the soldered RAM, the missing Thunderbolt 4 and this processor are hard to justify against Intel Core Ultra and Snapdragon X Elite alternatives. [4][5]
- The 32 GB 16U55U-H.AU87U1 is the better choice if you need more memory headroom, since the base model cannot be upgraded. [10]
