Summary

A 6 L ultrasonic cool-mist humidifier with app control and automatic humidity regulation, meant for a bedroom or enclosed medium room where quiet nights and a big tank matter. Check your water and your tolerance for scrubbing before you buy: it wants distilled water and weekly cleaning, and owners report tank leaks and sensor drift.

Strengths

  • RTINGS called it very good for bedrooms: quiet, efficient and easy to schedule, with a measured 38-hour runtime.
  • The top-fill tank and removable washable parts make refills and teardown less messy than bottom-fill units.
  • Auto mode holds a humidity target, and Sleep Mode keeps regulating with the display and night light off.
  • The VeSync app adds schedules and remote control; no subscription is described as required for basic operation.
  • One owner in r/homeassistant ran one for about a year and said it worked well with their home automation.
  • A separate aroma pad takes essential oils without exposing the tank to them.

Weaknesses

  • Cleaning is heavier than “top-fill” implies: daily water changes, weekly cleans, vinegar soaks, and no dishwasher-safe parts.
  • Owners in r/fixit report tank-and-base leaks, hardened gaskets, and units that stop misting while running.
  • The humidity sensor can read high: one owner measured 63% against 48.5% and 41% on two separate hygrometers.
  • Tap water means mineral white dust in the air and on furniture, and a nearby air purifier may throw poor-air warnings.
  • An owner could not lift humidity in a roughly 600 ft² apartment with active exhaust; open, leaky rooms are a stretch.
  • Nobody has published a failure rate, so leaks and sensor drift are reported failure modes with an unknown population rate.

Cleaning and upkeep

The manual says change the water daily and clean at least weekly: hand-wash the detachable parts, soak scaled surfaces in distilled white vinegar for 15–20 minutes, then rinse and dry fully. Its descaling example uses about 710 mL (3 US cups) of vinegar. EPA recommends cleaning portable humidifiers every third day and using fresh low-mineral water; follow the more cautious schedule when water sits. RTINGS found no dishwasher-safe parts. A February 2026 r/homeassistant thread on this exact model complains about narrow passages, reddish residue and white film from tap-water minerals — expect scrubbing, not a rinse.

Humidity control and sensor accuracy

Auto mode aims at 40–50% RH out of the box, and Sleep Mode keeps regulation running with the display off. The built-in sensor samples the air right next to the unit, so it can drift from the rest of the room: a 2022 owner measured 63% on the humidifier against 48.5% and 41% on two external hygrometers in a grow tent, and a January 2025 owner in r/smarthome could not get past 40–43% in a high-ceiling bedroom even on High. EPA advises keeping indoor humidity at or below 50% RH. Cross-check with a separate hygrometer, and aim the nozzle away from curtains, walls and furniture — condensation and damp furniture are the real failure modes here.

Tank leaks and mist stoppages

The r/fixit leak thread (January 2025 through May 2026) has secondhand and two-month-old Classic 300S units leaking at the tank/base seam; one owner traced it to a hardened rubber seal after storage. A February 2024 owner’s new unit misted, then stopped, and improved when the tank was repositioned. Levoit’s troubleshooting runs through tank seating, the float, and a blocked air inlet or nozzle before suspected electronics — and it warns against wedging the tank up as a permanent fix. No failure-rate data exists, so treat these as owner-reported failure modes rather than a measured defect rate.

Running costs

Electricity is minor: 26 W at 8 hours a day for a year is about 75.92 kWh, or $18.98 at an assumed $0.25/kWh; running 24 hours at full draw would be about 227.76 kWh and $56.94. Water is the real variable. At an assumed $1.25 a gallon, buying a gallon every two days adds roughly $228.13 a year, and a gallon a day $456.25 — planning examples, not metered averages; a home distiller or reverse-osmosis system changes the math. Optional consumables: Levoit aroma pads are $14.99 for a 16-pack (about $0.94 a pad, Levoit US, October 2026) and can be rinsed and reused; descaling is ordinary vinegar. One accessory trap: Levoit’s descaling pads cost $14.99 for a 10-pack (Levoit US, October 2026), but the maker’s compatibility list names only heated models — LV600S, OasisMist 450S, OasisMist 600S and LV600HH — not the Classic 300S.

Is it worth it?

The October 2026 checks had it at $69.99 at Target and Best Buy, and $71.99–$79.99 at Levoit’s own shop, where some pages cached the promotion. At $55 or less new it is strong value if you will maintain it; $56–$70 is a defensible normal buy; $71–$80 is justifiable if VeSync and overnight quiet matter. Above $80, the math shifts: the OasisMist 450S at $89.99 adds warm mist, and the Superior Studio 450 evaporative at $129.99 handles tap water without ultrasonic mineral dust, though it needs weekly wick care. If you are buying distilled water in bulk, the running-cost section above is where the real comparison lives.

Which model this is

This page covers the Levoit Classic 300S Smart Ultrasonic Top-Fill Cool Mist Humidifier, US model HEAPHULVSUS0036, UPC 810043373210. It is not the Core 300S air purifier, the non-smart Classic 300, the warm-mist LV600S or the OasisMist 450S. The listing title “Levoit Humidifiers for Bedroom Large Room 6L” maps to this 6 L model.
