Summary

A 6 L top-fill ultrasonic cool-mist humidifier with Wi-Fi scheduling and automatic humidity control for medium-size enclosed bedrooms. The one thing to check before buying: it needs daily water changes and regular cleaning, and it will spit mineral dust if you use hard tap water.

Strengths

  • RTINGS instrumented testing praises its quiet bedroom use, long runtime, app features and automatic humidity management.
  • The wide-mouth top-fill means you refill without turning a full tank upside down.
  • Live Science measured roughly 19 hours at high in a 234-ft² room and praised the app and top-fill design.
  • Best Buy buyer feedback for the exact model highlights convenient app control, quiet operation and ease of use.
  • RTINGS notes a compact footprint relative to its 6 L tank.

Weaknesses

  • Tank and base leakage is a recurring owner complaint across Reddit and Target reviews, with no established root cause or failure rate.
  • Hard tap water produces white dust on nearby surfaces; EPA confirms ultrasonic units can disperse mineral particles.
  • Cleaning demands are real: EPA recommends emptying and drying water daily and cleaning every third day; RTINGS states no parts are dishwasher safe.
  • Owners report humidity readings that disagree with separate meters, making Auto mode hard to trust without an independent hygrometer.
  • RTINGS measured 6.8 L usable tank capacity versus the 6 L manufacturer figure, so do not fill past the MAX mark trying to match a lab result.

Humidity control and app

The built-in RH sensor drives Auto mode, which defaults to a 40–50% RH target. RTINGS measured 65 minutes from 30% to 60% inside its test apparatus, and Live Science saw 71% on the unit and 69% on other sensors in a 234-ft² room starting at 60% RH. Owners in r/smarthome report inability to exceed 35–43% in their rooms. EPA recommends keeping indoor RH no higher than 50%. The unit works with physical controls if disconnected from Wi-Fi, but remote schedules and humidity history need VeSync.

Leaks and build quality

Owners on Reddit and Target describe tank and base leakage: a January 2025 Reddit owner of a used unit described leaking and an unevenly sitting tank; a February 2025 respondent reported a two-month-old unit leaking even on distilled water; a March 2026 owner described a hardening gasket after storage. A Target verified purchase review in March 2026 also complains of puddles despite seal and alignment checks. Neither a universal root cause nor a population failure rate is established. Check the level surface, outlet valve, cracks, rubber gasket and tank seating, and disconnect power when leakage occurs.

Cleaning, descaling and water

EPA recommends emptying, drying and refilling water every day, thoroughly cleaning portable humidifiers every third day, and keeping indoor RH no higher than 50%. The original Classic 300S manual calls for 710 mL (three US cups) of distilled white vinegar, a 15–20 minute soak of wetted areas and removable components such as the float and noise silencer, followed by complete rinsing. Do not atomize vinegar or spray detergent chemicals into occupied rooms. Distilled water may be costly; ordinary hard tap water may leave white dust. A water filter sponge mentioned in marketing should not be presumed to remove all dissolved solids.

Running costs and consumables

Electricity at the 26 W nameplate, if constant for 8 h a day over a year, is 75.92 kWh; at an assumed $0.25/kWh that is $18.98/year. Sustained 24 h/day nameplate load would be 227.76 kWh and $56.94 yearly. These are illustrations, not measured billing. Buying 0.5 gal/day of distilled water at an assumed $1.25/gal costs $228.13/year; 1 gal/day costs $456.25/year. A 16-pack of aroma pads from Levoit costs $14.99; twelve changes a year amortize to $11.24/year. A scenario combining 8 h/day rated input and 0.5 gal/day distilled water costs $247.11/year excluding purchase, cleaning, oil, tax and labor.

Parts and repairs

No OEM US replacement SKUs or prices are established for the tank, outlet gasket, float, transducer, nozzle or electronics. Some parts are documented as removable for cleaning, which does not guarantee separately purchasable factory spares. Contact Levoit by exact model and serial, especially while under warranty. The descaling pads sold by Levoit ($14.99 for a 10-pack) are not a validated Classic 300S part; the maker’s accessory page limits them to LV600S, OasisMist 450S/600S and LV600HH models with heating plates.

Is it worth it?

At Best Buy’s $69.99 price (October 2026) it sits in the strong-buy range if the cleaning routine is acceptable. At the Levoit US and Target prices of $79.99 it is ordinary. The $69.99–$79.99 observed range is not a proven long-term US median. Above $80, Levoit’s own OasisMist 450S is $79.97 promotional and adds warm mist, the Superior Studio 450 is $129.99 (sold out direct) and uses an evaporative wick that tolerates tap water better, and Target’s 200S Dual is $44.49 for smaller rooms.

Which model this is

This page covers the LEVOIT Classic 300S smart ultrasonic top-fill cool-mist humidifier, US model HEAPHULVSUS0036 at Best Buy (SKU 6506453) and TCIN 88764397 at Target. It is not the Core 300S air purifier, the non-smart Classic 300, or the OasisMist warm-mist model. The maker’s UPC 810043373210 differs from Target’s Classic 300S UPC 810043374170; confirm the actual carton and manufacturer model before assuming the same retail batch.
