Summary

The Levoit Core 300-P is a compact, purely mechanical air purifier for bedrooms and small rooms where smart features are not needed. Check the filter before you buy: it is HEPA-Type, not certified HEPA.

Strengths

  • AHAM Verifide 143 CFM smoke CADR, confirmed by two independent instrumented tests.
  • Among the best raw cleaning per dollar in its size class at its price point.
  • Compact and light, easy to move between rooms.
  • Quiet in sleep mode, with simple three-speed controls.
  • Purely mechanical filtration, so no ozone risk from an ionizer.
  • 2-year limited warranty and inexpensive replacement filters.

Weaknesses

  • The filter is HEPA-Type, not certified HEPA, after Levoit dropped its True HEPA claims.
  • No air-quality sensor, auto mode or app; manual speeds only.
  • Power draw is high for the size class, over 2.5× a key competitor at level 2.
  • The power cable is non-removable, so cable damage means a new unit.
  • The pre-filter cannot be taken out for washing.
  • Owners report filter life and coverage area as recurring concerns.

Filtration and the HEPA-Type filter

The 300-P uses a three-stage stack: a pre-filter that grabs pet fur and larger dust, a main particle filter, and a high-efficiency activated-carbon layer. It is purely mechanical, so there is no ionizer or UV and no ozone risk. The catch is the rating. AHAM’s directory lists the filter as HEPA-Type, not certified HEPA, after Levoit permanently discontinued its True HEPA and H13 claims for this device following a Dyson challenge through the National Advertising Division. HouseFresh calls it a non-HEPA-grade particle filter. Carbon content differs by filter too: the Original filter holds 40–50 g of activated carbon, while the Pet Allergy, Toxin Absorber and Smoke Remover filters hold 90 g with Levoit’s ARC formula.

Cleaning performance

Independent tests back the CADR. HouseFresh measured an Energy Star profile of 140 smoke, 141 dust and 145 pollen CFM and cleared its 728 ft³ test room in 54 minutes at top speed. BreatheSafeAir measured 258 m³/h against a 240 m³/h claim and cleared a 29.4 m³ room from 500 to 5 µg/m³ in 26:42 at maximum. Tom’s Guide’s 2022 test was harsher, calling the unit short on performance and features next to similarly sized rivals.

Noise and running costs

Noise depends on who measured it and from how far. Levoit claims 24–54.5 dB; HouseFresh measured 37.1 dB in sleep, 40.5 dB at speed 2 and 50.2 dB at top speed from 3 ft. BreatheSafeAir measured 47 dB at level 2 and 59 dB at maximum from 1 metre. AirPurifierFirst measured higher still, 40.7 to 64.9 dB, using a different method. There is no single number to trust, but the low-speed mode is quiet enough for a bedroom in most reports.

Filters run $29.99 for the Original, $35.99 for Pet Allergy and Toxin Absorber, and $39.99 for Smoke Remover, replaced every six to eight months. Generic two-packs exist for around $29.99, and HouseFresh tested Pureburg generics at $24 for two and found slightly slower cleaning. Annual running cost estimates range from about $90 to about $109 depending on usage, and BreatheSafeAir’s five-year cost of ownership comes to $552.41.

Owner reports

Best Buy reviewers praise noticeable air-quality improvement, reasonable noise, size and ease of use. On Reddit, one r/HomeSetup owner reported allergy relief noticeable by the second night and good pet-hair capture by the pre-filter, but said heavy cooking odors still linger unless the unit runs on high. Recurring complaints in reviews center on filter life and coverage area. A 5+ year long-term update from AirPurifierFirst reported the unit held up well over more than five years. A related-model signal from r/AirPurifiers — the Core 300S — mentions a plastic-like smell from an anti-allergy filter and one stuck air-quality sensor, but that is not the exact model.

Is it worth it?

At $85–95 the 300-P is a sensible buy for a bedroom or small room where smart features are not needed. Above about $110 the Core 300S or Core 200S are better long-term value once running costs are counted, because the 300S adds a PM sensor, auto mode and an app while drawing about 40% less power. Buyers who need certified HEPA filtration should look elsewhere; this model’s filter is HEPA-Type only. Levoit lists it at $99.99 and discounts it into the $80–90 range.

Which model this is

The Amazon listing for this model is ASIN B08GLVHN39. Don’t confuse it with the Core 300S, a smart version with a PM sensor, auto mode and an app, or with the Core 200S and Vital 200S, which are different products.
