Summary
A 7-inch E Ink e-reader with physical page-turn buttons and a grip-side bezel, built for one-handed reading. Check two things before you buy: the 32 GB of storage is fixed and cannot be expanded, and the charge readout on this model stalls around 92%.
Strengths
- Physical page-turn buttons in a one-handable asymmetric body, with the button direction swapping to match your grip.
- 32 GB of storage, well up on the 8 GB of the Libra H2O it replaced.
- Bluetooth audiobook support at no extra hardware cost, playing Kobo Store titles.
- OverDrive library borrowing with a library card is built in.
- USB-C charging and IPX8 waterproofing, so it survives a bath.
Weaknesses
- The charge readout stalls around 92% and the indicator light stops blinking about a minute after you plug in; TechRadar names erratic charging as the reason to avoid it.
- Front-light evenness varies between units, and owners report light that is darker on the handle side.
- The screen is recessed, so dust and hair collect around the edges.
- The all-plastic body is heavy for its class at 215 g and feels less premium than a Kindle Oasis.
- The 7-inch panel crops comic frames and speech bubbles, so it is a poor fit for graphic novels.
- The battery capacity is disputed in print, so owner battery claims are hard to pin down.

Full research notes and sources
Which model this is
This page covers the Kobo Libra 2, model number N418, the 32 GB black or white 7-inch reader that replaced the Kobo Libra H2O in 2021. It is not the Libra H2O (2019, 8 GB, no audiobooks) and not the later Kobo Libra Colour, which uses a Kaleido colour screen and supports the Kobo Stylus. Storage here is fixed at 32 GB, so ignore any listing that promises a microSD slot.
Panel, front light and page-turn buttons
The panel is the reason to pick this over a rectangular reader. Carta 1200 is documented at 20% faster response and 15% better contrast than the older Carta 1000, and because the screen sits recessed in the bezel rather than flush, that contrast gain is easier to see.
The buttons do the heavy lifting. Kobo’s software swaps the button direction depending on which hand holds the device and offers an invert setting in Reading Settings. At least one owner reports the upper button feeling looser than the lower one.
Battery and charging
Kobo’s guide claims up to two months per charge, and Computer quotes up to 6 weeks. The weak point is the indicator: TechRadar documents the light stopping about a minute after the cable goes in and the estimate counting down to zero at roughly the 92% mark, after which the screen just reads “charging from USB”. Computer measured the same plateau from the other direction, 0% to 92% in 50 minutes and then about another hour to full. TechRadar lists the erratic charging as the single reason to avoid the device, while noting you can read while it charges and that 92% still leaves days of reading.
The true capacity is unresolved in print: 1,200 mAh in The eBook Reader’s spec list, 1,500 mAh in Good e-Reader and Computer, and 1,400 mAh in a reader comment. Treat any owner battery-life figure with that spread in mind.
Audiobooks, library books and upkeep
Bluetooth is built in for Kobo Store audiobooks on headphones or a speaker, and there are no speakers on the device, so you cannot listen without one or the other. Audiobooks cannot be sideloaded, and OverDrive audiobooks were not available. OverDrive eBook borrowing works with a library card, but owners report the device failing to sync loans, keeping old books and losing a borrowed book mid-sync.
Upkeep is light. Charging is USB-C with any 5 V, 2 A supply. iFixit’s teardown of the closely related Kobo Libra Colour notes that device is nearly identical to the Libra 2, with the same curved right edge and two page-turn buttons, so those findings transfer with care; no warranty length was confirmed. The ongoing cost is the content store: Kobo Plus with one audiobook credit a month was $9.99/month in the US and $12.99/month in Canada at launch, Kobo states its ebook pricing matches the Kindle Store, and library borrowing through OverDrive is free with a library card. The only hardware extra is the $40 SleepCover.
Is it worth it?
At launch the Libra 2 was $179.99 in the US, and TechRadar recorded an official price of $189.99 in February 2024. On those numbers it makes sense below about $180, is fair up to $189.99, and gets hard to justify above $200. At the same money the 11th-generation Kindle Paperwhite is $160 with a flush screen but no buttons, the Kobo Sage is $260 with an 8-inch flush screen and stylus support, and the Kindle Oasis is $270. Kobo rarely discounts deeply, typically about $20 off list during sales such as Black Friday.
