Kobo Clara BW: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-19
Summary
The Clara BW is a compact 6-inch, 300 ppi monochrome e-reader whose complaints are mostly expectation-driven: it sits only about $20 below the colour Clara Colour, some owners report uneven front lighting, and there are no page-turn buttons. Running cost is close to zero — no subscription is required — with the real long-term cost being repair parts, and the main repair is a battery swap at $59.99 plus tools. It is the better buy at Kobo’s sale prices of $119.99–$139.99; at regular retail the colour Clara Colour is the stronger screen for the money.
Common problems and fixes
- Uneven front lighting — reported by at least one owner who returned the reader over it; a unit-to-unit panel variance rather than a defect rate, so check the light before keeping the unit [12].
- No page-turn buttons — navigation is touchscreen-only, so page turning depends on the touch panel and your grip [11][23].
- Disputed Carta 1300 contrast — TechRadar and others see visibly better contrast, while The eBook Reader’s side-by-side found text slightly darker on the older Clara 2E; treat the gain as unit-dependent [8][12].
- No cloud file transfer and no sideload sync — Dropbox/Google Drive transfer is not supported on the Clara BW, and sideloaded books do not sync across devices; there is also no Readium LCP support for some local library loans [8][13].
- Occasional page-advance hiccups — one long-time Kindle user reports pages that “refuse to advance… then go forward two pages”; no widespread hardware failure or defect rate has been reported [20]. The US warranty is one year [4].
Parts and consumables
- Battery (N365 / N365 B / P365) — $59.99 plus tools at iFixit; replacement is rated Moderate, about 30 to 45 minutes, with the cell held by stretch-release adhesive [6][7].
- Display / screen — about 70% of a new device once shipping and kit are included, per The eBook Reader [12].
- Motherboard and covers — genuine parts sold by iFixit [5][6].
- 10W USB power adapter — $14.99 from Kobo [1].
Match parts to the printed model number: there are three hardware revisions (N365, N365 B, P365), each with its own iFixit guide, and parts are not interchangeable between them [7].
Yearly running cost
No subscription is required, so the ongoing cost is optional accessories and repairs rather than a service fee. Budget items from Kobo’s store: Basic SleepCover and Clear Case at $19.99, other SleepCovers and the Kobo Remote at $29.99, and the 10W adapter at $14.99 [1]. The repair parts are the real long-term cost: a genuine N365 battery is $59.99 plus tools and a screen replacement runs about 70% of a new device [7][12]. One owner measured about 12.3 GB usable after a firmware update [13]. Kobo Plus is optional [24].
When it is a good buy
- At Kobo sale prices ($119.99 in the December 2025 sale, $139.99 in the August 2026 sale): strong value for a small, waterproof, library-friendly monochrome reader.
- At regular retail ($159.99 at Kobo’s US store as of September 2026, and about the same at Staples Canada): the value weakens, because the Clara Colour adds a colour screen and a 2.0 GHz dual-core processor for roughly $20 more, and Digital Trends recommended against the BW at that gap.
Named alternatives:
- Kobo Clara Colour — the better choice when you want a colour screen, page-turn buttons or stylus support, for about $20 more [11][13][23].
- Kobo Libra Colour — the top pick in The Consumers Guide, with cloud file transfer and a larger screen [23].
