Summary
A pocket-size USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 portable SSD rated up to 2,000MB/s read and write, sold as 1TB decimal (about 931GiB formatted). Check your host before buying: it only reaches that speed on a true 20Gb/s Gen 2x2 port, and Kingston now lists SXS2000/1000G as discontinued.
Strengths
- TweakTown saw over 2,000MB/s sequential reads on exact SXS2000/1000G and strong performance on a 100GB mixed transfer of over 62,000 files.
- Pocketable: 28.9 g and under 70 mm long, with a sleeve that adds protection without a hard case.
- IP55 resistance with the sleeve distinguishes it from many unprotected USB SSDs.
- Five-year conditional warranty is long for a portable SSD, subject to wear and purchase-channel conditions.
- Firmware S9I00129, published May 14, 2026, fixes incorrect SSD Wear Indicator values and claims improved stability for 500GB/1TB/2TB units.
Weaknesses
- Sustained writes collapse: Tom’s Hardware’s 1TB sample wrote about 103GB at 1,890MB/s, then averaged 214MB/s for the rest of a 15-minute test, needing roughly 30 minutes of idle to recover fully.
- DRAM-less design shows weaker random-read responsiveness than selected rivals in Tom’s Hardware testing.
- Real-world disconnect reports: r/techsupport owners describe XS2000 units becoming unreliable after about two years, with Windows Error 121 / semaphore timeout in one case; no failure rate is published.
- Reaching 2,000MB/s needs a true Gen 2x2 host; Kingston warns typical Macs do not negotiate that speed.
- The 12-inch cable is short, and no USB-A lead is included; a longer cable must be rated for 20Gb/s data.
- Discontinued model with inflated old-stock prices, and no published TBW endurance rating.

Speed and the sustained-write cliff
The advertised 2,000MB/s is a peak, not a promise for large jobs. Tom’s Hardware’s sustained-write test tells the other half: about 103GB at 1,890MB/s, then an average of 214MB/s after the cache filled, with roughly 30 minutes of idle needed to restore dynamic cache. For 200–500GB film or image dumps, the cache limit matters more than the headline number. Results depend on fill state, firmware, cooling and write pattern, and the DRAM-less design trails selected rivals in random reads.
Compatibility: the Gen 2x2 trap
A USB-C, USB4 or Thunderbolt label does not establish 20Gb/s operation. Kingston’s own FAQ says typical Macs do not negotiate the advertised Gen 2x2 speed, so a Mac user may see closer to 1GB/s over a 10Gb/s link. The supplied 12-inch cable is the one Kingston recommends; a longer replacement must be expressly rated for 20Gb/s data, and an adapter can lower the negotiated speed. Consoles can store supported games but do not necessarily launch native next-gen titles from external USB media, and phone or tablet use may need USB OTG support.
Reliability and firmware
Owners in r/techsupport report XS2000 units becoming unreliable after about two years, including one 1TB unit that could still run a game but could no longer copy data, returning Windows Error 121 / semaphore timeout. A second commenter’s 1TB unit froze on Windows and read extremely slowly on Linux after only 15 reported powered-on hours. A BBB complaint dated October 7, 2026 alleges a failed 1TB unit and an offer to replace it with a slower XS1000. None of these establish a population failure rate; causes can involve drive, USB, cable, host or filesystem. Kingston published firmware S9I00128 on March 10, 2026 for stability and S9I00129 on May 14, 2026, which fixes incorrect SSD Wear Indicator values and claims further stability for 500GB/1TB/2TB units; 4TB uses a separate family, so never flash a 4TB image to this 1TB drive. Back up before updating. Practical diagnosis: copy readable data first, then try the bundled cable, a known-good native port without an unpowered hub, a second computer, and manufacturer-approved tools; use Kingston SSD Manager to identify offered firmware only after backup.
Kingston lists SXS2000/1000G as discontinued, and DigiKey marks it obsolete. Visible offered new-stock prices as of October 24, 2026 ran about $279–$357: University of Michigan Tech Shop listed $279.00 with North Campus stock, Altex Electronics listed $289.99, Newegg marketplace listed $356.99 from seller HyperCore with a separate $310.00 search listing, and Best Buy indexed about $328.85 but out of stock; B&H Photo marked it “No Longer Available.” Historical launch pricing was $159.99 in October 2021, which is not a live 2026 offer. Editorial thresholds: up to $120 delivered from an authorized seller is compelling for a buyer with a true Gen 2x2 port; $121–$160 is conditional; $161–$200 is poor value; above $200, skip. At $199.99, Crucial X10 Pro 1TB was in stock at Micro Center Phoenix with 20Gb/s and up to 2,100/2,000MB/s; at $219.99, Lexar SL500 1TB was listed by Best Buy first-party with 2,000/1,800MB/s and manufacturer-advertised software AES.
Parts, running costs and warranty
There are no mandatory consumables. The SSD wears through writes and time, but internal NAND is not customer-replaceable and Kingston gives no TBW rating for this SKU. Mandatory recurring cost is $0 per year; the drive is bus-powered with no battery or subscription. A hypothetical 2W active average for four hours a day is 2.92 kWh a year, or $0.58 at an assumed $0.20 per kWh; 2W around the clock is 17.52 kWh, or $3.50. Neither 2W nor that duty cycle has been measured for this drive. The original rubber sleeve is included; Kingston formerly sold a three-pack, SNA-XSR1-3P, now discontinued, with DigiKey showing remaining stock at $17.48 per three-pack, about $5.83 per sleeve before shipping and tax. Kingston did not publish a separately orderable original 20Gb/s USB-C cable SKU or price. Warranty is five years from purchase or the SSD wear limit, with no independently verified failure statistics, repair turnaround or RMA outcomes. Save the invoice and exact serial, and buy through verifiable channels; after RMA, do not assume Kingston preserves or migrates files.
Is it worth it?
At $120 or less from an authorized seller, it is compelling for a buyer with a true 20Gb/s port who mostly moves short or medium jobs. At $121–$160, it is conditional against alternatives. Above $200, skip: at $279–$357 for discontinued old stock, Crucial X10 Pro at $199.99 and Lexar SL500 at $219.99 offer more sensible availability. The older Kingston XS1000 1TB at 10Gb/s and up to 1,050/1,000MB/s is the fallback only when an authorized retailer has it for meaningfully less; it lacks IP55 and native 20Gb/s, so it is not an equal-performance replacement.
Which model this is
This page covers the exact Kingston XS2000 External SSD 1TB, manufacturer part SXS2000/1000G. Do not confuse it with XS1000/1000G, a different 10Gb/s drive, or with the 500GB (SXS2000/500G), 2TB (SXS2000/2000G) or 4TB (SXS2000/4000G) variants, which differ in cache behavior; the 4TB unit uses a separate firmware family. Kingston’s support FAQ, datasheet and warranty table all reference this model family.
