Summary
A wired-only, hot-swappable 75% mechanical keyboard for people who want QMK/VIA programming and a steel plate without paying for a gasket-mounted board. Check the return window before you buy: owners have reported stock stabilizers ticking within months, well after Keychron’s seven-day return clock closes.
Strengths
- Hot-swappable PCB takes both 3-pin and 5-pin MX switches, so switch swaps need no soldering.
- Screw-in stabilizers accept third-party Cherry and Durock sets.
- QMK/VIA is confirmed working on macOS, Windows and Linux, with knob remapping.
- The steel plate and internal foam give the ABS case a solid feel and quiet typing.
- RTINGS called the build excellent and the damping good enough for an open office.
- At entry pricing it delivers programmable firmware, hot-swap and a steel plate for a plastic-case sum.
Weaknesses
- Wired only, so there is no multi-device pairing and no wireless option on this model.
- High profile with no wrist rest in the box; both independent labs flagged the height.
- Stock stabilizers began ticking after a few months in one long-term owner report.
- One owner describes the all-plastic tray mount with no metal inserts and a toggle switch that breaks easily.
- The non-shine-through keycaps hide most of the RGB.
- Returns are tight: seven days from arrival, buyer-paid return shipping, refund of product cost only.

Build and typing feel
The V1 is a cost-driven reworking of Keychron’s Q1: ABS plastic instead of metal, tray mount instead of gasket mount, with the steel plate and internal foam retained. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer tested the Frosted Black / K Pro Red version and logged 81 WPM at 92.06% accuracy on 10fastfingers against his stated average of 73 WPM at 90.81%. RTINGS found excellent build quality and credited the sound-absorbing foam with keeping typing noise low enough for open offices. Both labs agreed on the ergonomics: a high profile and no included wrist rest.
Owner feedback matches the labs on the positive side. In r/Keychron, owners describe no squeaks and a solid, muted feel out of the box that needs no modification, and the knob is praised for its pronounced steps. The caution is specific: an r/BudgetKeebs long-term thread reports stock stabilizers ticking after a few months and flags the plastic tray mount and its toggle switch. Both are single-owner reports, not a measured failure rate, but stabilizer tuning is the first maintenance item to expect.
RGB and keycaps
The backlight is south-facing RGB, not white. Keychron’s spec tables, Tom’s Guide and Divinikey all say RGB. It looks weaker than the spec because the double-shot PBT keycaps are explicitly not shine-through, so the light shows between keys rather than through the legends. If you want backlit legends, this is not that board.
Warranty and returns
Keychron’s US warranty runs twelve months, with keycaps and palm rests covered for only three months, and service including replacement parts for 90 days or the remaining warranty term, whichever is longer. Returns are a separate, much shorter promise: a non-quality return must be requested within seven days of arrival, the buyer pays return shipping, and the refund covers product cost only, processed within up to seven working days. Unauthorized firmware flashing voids the warranty, which matters on a QMK board that Keychron publishes a reset procedure for. A brand-level Trustpilot aggregate for keychron.com is labelled “Bad”; one review there mentions $150+ return shipping to China, a figure Keychron’s own policy does not confirm.
Price and what to pay
The defensible anchors are a $44.99 all-time low at Woot in April 2026, reported by The Verge alongside $70 direct from Keychron, and $62.10 on sale from an $84.00 regular price at the US retailer Divinikey. Keychron’s own store listed ISO assembled-knob variants at $69.99 and $84.99, the $15 gap set only by switch type. Tom’s Guide quoted $94 for the assembled-with-knob version at its May 2024 review. Above roughly $85 the comparison tightens: Keychron’s V1 8K is $74.99 and the V1 Max is $104.99 on sale from a $114.99 regular price, both adding features the wired V1 lacks. A palm rest is about $15.
Which model this is
This is the wired V1 in the V Series, sold assembled, assembled with a knob, or barebones in Frosted Black, Carbon Black and Shell White, with separate ISO-layout versions. It is not the V1 Max (wireless, gasket mount), the V1 8K (wired, 8000 Hz polling) or the V1 Ultra 8K (wireless). One retailer lists the board as “Keychron V1 version 2.0”, a label Keychron does not use itself. Shell White assembled and barebone variants showed as sold out in Keychron’s indexed variant list, so the US choice set may be narrower than the spec table suggests. The listing tracked here is ASIN B09NHSXCTM.
