Summary

A compact 1080p/30fps USB webcam with autofocus, a 75° diagonal field of view, an omnidirectional noise-reducing mono microphone, electronic pan/tilt/2× zoom, a sliding privacy cover and a blue live LED. Check the return policy before you buy: the only hands-on test found washed-out, unflattering exposure, and the model is discontinued.

Strengths

  • Sharp detail in a three-week hands-on test, with reasonable contrast.
  • Physical sliding cover blocks the lens; blue LED shows live status.
  • Autofocus plus electronic pan, tilt and 2× zoom on a small body.
  • USB-A cable with a bundled USB-C adapter; no cloud account needed.
  • Limited 2-year worldwide warranty and wipe-down resistance to disinfectants.
  • Threaded 1/4-inch socket fits standard desk stands and tripods.

Weaknesses

  • Only one hands-on test found washed-out, unflattering exposure that software did not fully fix.
  • Narrow 75° field of view suits one person, not a group.
  • Mono microphone, not a stereo pair.
  • Fixed 1.5 m cable is not detachable.
  • No 60 fps, 4K, HDR or Windows Hello face unlock.
  • Discontinued by Kensington; replacement stock and parts are uncertain.

Image quality and exposure

Kensington rates the W2000 at 2 MP on a 1/2.7-inch CMOS sensor with autofocus and automatic light correction. In a three-week, roughly two-calls-a-day hands-on test on a MacBook Air and a separate monitor, sharpness and contrast were good, but the face looked pale and overexposed compared with the laptop’s built-in camera even after brightness, color and contrast were adjusted in Kensington’s software. Coworkers noticed the difference. That is one tester’s direct observation, not a measured population defect rate. Kensington’s own troubleshooting advice is to reduce brightness when the picture looks washed out and to reset focus by moving a hand toward the lens and then drawing it back to the face.

Field of view and framing

The 75° diagonal angle is deliberately narrow: it frames one person and keeps background clutter out, but it is not a room or group camera, and the 2× electronic zoom only narrows it further. The body also tilts 37° vertically and swivels 360° horizontally on its clip.

Audio and privacy

The microphone is a single omnidirectional mono unit with manufacturer-described noise reduction, not a stereo pair and not a directional headset. The sliding cover physically blocks the lens, and the blue LED shows when the camera and microphone are live, but the cover does not mute the microphone; use the meeting app or OS mute for confidential calls. Kensington lists a separate TrueHue download for Windows and macOS on the exact-model support page, dated August 18, 2026, while older packaging refers to Kensington Konnect.

Power, build and maintenance

The camera is USB-powered with no separate adapter and no consumables: no batteries, filters or subscriptions. Standby draw is 0.2 W and an independent test measured 0.9 W while running. An illustrative 3 hours active plus 21 hours idle each day works out to about 2.52 kWh a year, roughly $0.50 at an assumed $0.20 per kWh. The enclosure is black ABS with a plastic lens, a TPE cable and rubber grip surfaces, and the camera meets MIL-STD-810H Method 504.3 contamination by fluids, so it can be wiped with disinfectants. It is not waterproof and must not be submerged. The 1.5 m cable is fixed and not detachable, so a distant desktop tower may need an extension or a different position.

Asking prices checked October 29, 2026. Kensington’s US page still shows $77.99 but marks the model discontinued and unavailable. Marketplace offers for the exact part number K81175WW included $36.96 at NeweggBusiness, about $46.57 to $46.78 at Best Buy Marketplace, $54 to $58 at SHI Direct, about $55.15 at B&H Photo, and $62.95 at Walmart Marketplace in an older listing. These are seller-fulfilled asking prices with varying stock and warranty terms, not completed sales. Value guidance from the research: $35 or below is strong value if the image looks acceptable on your setup; $36 to $45 is fair clearance; $46 to $55 is conditional against a Logitech Brio 100 at $29.99 sale or $39.99 list, or a Logitech C920s at $59.99 sale or $69.99 usual; at $60 or more, newer models are the safer buy. Optional accessories are extra: a Kensington desk stand K87651WW at $38.99 in the catalog or $49.05 from Neutron USA, a ring light K87653WW at $51.99, a C-clamp K87654WW at $58.99, and a boom arm K87652WW at $116.99.

Do not confuse it with the W1050, W2005, W2050 Pro or W3050 EQ, which are separate models in the same line.
