Summary

The Kasa Spot Pan Tilt EC71 is TP-Link’s budget indoor security camera: 1080p video, 360° pan, 113° tilt, night vision and local microSD recording with no mandatory subscription. Check your network before you buy: it connects to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, and 1080p footage is capped at 15 fps.

Strengths

  • Local microSD recording with no mandatory subscription; the Kasa Care cloud plan is optional.
  • 360° pan and 113° tilt cover a whole room from a single corner mount.
  • Person detection, subject tracking and up to 16 activity zones come built in.
  • A 2026 roundup found its baby crying detection reliable for nursery monitoring.
  • 24/7 recording to the SD card keeps working through an internet outage.

Weaknesses

  • 1080p is capped at 15 fps, so motion looks less smooth than at 20 or 30 fps.
  • Wi-Fi is 2.4 GHz only; the camera cannot join a 5 GHz network.
  • Pan and tilt are sluggish, and both TechHive and TechGearLab found motion tracking ineffective.
  • The Kasa app is dated and clunky, with no thumbnail preview and no web interface.
  • Night vision is black and white only and drops off quickly with distance.
  • No RTSP or ONVIF, so it will not feed a third-party NVR.

Video, pan and tilt

TechGearLab scored video 7.9/10 in June 2025, praising clarity but noting undersaturated colors, dark centers and washed-out edges. Night vision reaches 30 ft in black and white only: there is no color night vision, no spotlight despite the “Kasa Spot” name, and TechGearLab says performance drops off quickly with distance.

The pan and tilt ranges let one camera watch an entire room. The motors are sluggish, though: TechHive called pan/tilt operation sluggish and motion tracking ineffective, and TechGearLab described tracking as clunky and lagging.

App and setup

Setup runs through the Kasa Smart app (iOS 10+, Android 5.0+), and there is no web browser interface for viewing or settings. The process has you connect to a temporary Wi-Fi network first, which TechHive described as slightly outdated.

Kasa cameras can be added to the Tapo app with limits, and video is encrypted with 128-bit AES over SSL/TLS. Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant are supported. There is no RTSP or ONVIF support, so the EC71 will not feed a third-party NVR.

Storage and running costs

The microSD slot takes cards up to 256 GB per Kasa’s spec (B&H lists 512 GB), and no card is in the box. Continuous 24/7 recording consumes about 250 MB per hour at 720p: a 32 GB card holds less than five days, a 256 GB card a little over a month. Without a subscription you get 24/7 continuous recording only — manual clip recording requires Kasa Care.

Kasa Care is optional: $3/mo or $30/yr for a single camera with 30-day history, $10/mo or $100/yr for up to 10 cameras. Recording locally to SD carries no monthly fee, which is where the EC71 saves you money.

Reliability and owner reports

TP-Link backs the EC71 with a 2-year limited warranty and keeps shipping firmware: the latest build (20260520, published 2026-06-08) enhanced device stability and security, and a 2024-05-31 build improved person detection and time sync. Nobody has published EC71-specific failure rates, so treat owner reports as anecdotes rather than defect rates.

In r/TPLinkKasa, one owner could not finish EC71 setup, getting “Unable to connect to your Wi-Fi network” after the LED blinked green, and another saw two of five TP-Link devices suddenly unable to connect with an orange status light. A r/homeassistant thread reports TP-Link/Kasa login credentials failing in Home Assistant integrations, and the TP-Link community forum has threads on SD card formatting problems, response degradation over time, Wi-Fi trouble after router changes and an “Other Error” when enabling continuous recording. These posts cover Kasa cameras generally; it is not clear how often they hit the EC71 specifically.

Is it worth it?

B&H listed it at $25.99 and Walmart at $38.88 around the TechHive review; TechGearLab listed it at $26 in June 2025, scored it 7.1/10 and ranked it #10 of 20 cameras tested, naming it “Best Value Panning Security Camera”. The TP-Link USA store lists it at $34.99, and the Tapo Store listed it at $34.99 in October 2026.

If you need outdoor use, higher frame rates, color night vision, dual-band Wi-Fi or a modern app, look elsewhere: the Tapo C210 lists at $29.99 with 2K video, and the Wyze Cam Pan v3 at $43.99 adds IP65 weather resistance and color night vision.
