Kasa Spot Pan Tilt (EC71): problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-13
Summary
The EC71 is a budget indoor pan-tilt camera that records 1080p video at 15 fps to a microSD card with no mandatory subscription. The problems owners report most are Wi-Fi setup and dropouts, SD card recognition, and a camera that responds slowly; the pan and tilt are sluggish and motion tracking is weak. With local recording only there is no monthly fee, and the optional Kasa Care plan is $30 a year for one camera, but the sources do not give a card price or electricity figure for a complete yearly total.
Common problems and fixes
- Wi-Fi setup fails — an owner could not finish setup and got “Unable to connect to your Wi-Fi network” after the LED blinked green; the camera is 2.4 GHz only and cannot join a 5 GHz network, so set it up on a 2.4 GHz band. [8][1]
- Devices drop off the network — owners report two of five TP-Link devices suddenly unable to connect with an orange status light; power-cycle the camera and re-check the router after changes. [9]
- SD card not recognized — the TP-Link forum has threads on cameras not recognizing previously used cards; reformat the card in the camera. [10]
- Slow response over time — owners report response degradation with use; the 20260520 firmware build published 2026-06-08 is described as enhancing device stability. [10][3]
- “Other Error” when recording — enabling continuous recording can throw an “Other Error”; the local microSD path works without a subscription. [10]
- Sluggish pan and tilt — TechHive and TechGearLab both call the motors sluggish and motion tracking ineffective, so expect lag rather than a defect. [4][5]
Parts and consumables
- Kasa Care cloud plan — $3 per month or $30 per year for one camera with 30-day history, $10 per month or $100 per year for up to 10 cameras; optional, local SD recording needs no subscription. [4]
Yearly running cost
Local recording to a microSD card carries no monthly fee. The only subscription is Kasa Care, $30 a year for one camera or $100 a year for up to 10 cameras, and it is optional. A microSD card is a one-time purchase but its price is not reported, and electricity use is not published, so the sources do not give a complete yearly figure.
When it is a good buy
The EC71 listed at $25.99 at B&H (April 2023), $26 at TechGearLab (June 2025) and $34.99 at the TP-Link and Tapo stores (October 2026). At or under about $30 it is a strong value for indoor pan-tilt monitoring. From $31 to $40 it is fair value, and the same money approaches the Tapo C210, which lists at $29.99 with 2K video. Above $40 it is weak value. The Wyze Cam Pan v3 at $43.99 adds IP65 weather resistance and color night vision, which makes it the better choice if you need to put a camera outdoors.
