John Boos RA-Board Series Rectangular Maple Cutting Board: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-18
Summary
The RA-Board is a 2-1/4 in thick edge-grain Northern Hard Rock Maple board, NSF certified and built in Effingham, Illinois, sold in four sizes from 18 x 12 in (13 lb) to 30 x 23-1/4 in. Its recurring complaints are warping and glue-joint separation — reported even by owners who oil every other week — and arrival-condition defects such as chips, rough patches and occasional glue-line delamination. The only running cost is oil and cream, sold as packs at $39.95-$49.95 (johnboos.com, Oct 2026); there are no filters, subscriptions or electricity. At or below about $150 for the 18 x 12 in size it is defensible for a permanent countertop board with monthly-oiling discipline; above $200 the weight and moisture sensitivity bite hardest.
Common problems and fixes
- Weight and return pain — 13 lb in the 18 x 12 in size up to 30 lb in the 24 x 18 in size; washing, storing and returning is awkward, and some owners kept flawed boards rather than pay return freight. In one BBB case the customer paid over $100 to return a split board. [1][6]
- Warranty excludes oiling-related cracking — one year from purchase or delivery, valid only from John Boos or authorized US resellers; a reseller mirror of the terms excludes “splitting, checking or cracking due to inadequate oiling” and warping from damp storage, and the customer bears packing and shipping costs if a factory return is required. The BBB complaint shows the dispute in practice: Boos responded that the board had not been oiled for 8 months and advised oiling all sides, wrapping in plastic and filling splits with wood glue. [5][14][6]
- Wirecutter no longer recommends edge-grain boards — after testing over 40 boards since 2015, its own Boos wood-board pick arrived extremely dry and developed a small crack in the handle after the first year; Wirecutter now cites cracking experience and harder-on-knives tradeoffs as the reasons. [3]
Parts and consumables
- Boos Block Mystery Oil — sold separately; oil and cream packs are listed at $39.95-$49.95 (johnboos.com, Oct 2026); the maker instructs oiling all surfaces at least monthly, more often if the board is washed often. No measured replacement interval exists. [1][2]
- Boos Block Board Cream — sold separately, part of the same packs; beeswax top coat after oiling. [1][2]
- Care applicator — $24.95 (johnboos.com, Oct 2026); optional, a soft cloth works too. [1]
Yearly running cost
No electricity, filters, subscriptions or licenses. The only consumables are Mystery Oil and Board Cream, sold as packs at $39.95-$49.95 (johnboos.com, Oct 2026); consumption depends on use and climate, so treat one pack a year as a budget assumption rather than a measured rate. If a board warps or splits beyond hygienic use it is replaced outright, and no failure rate is published. Factor return freight into ownership of the larger sizes: the 24 x 18 in board is 30 lb, and one BBB case shows return shipping over $100. [1][6]
When it is a good buy
John Boos official prices as checked Oct 13, 2026: 18 x 12 in $133.95, 20 x 15 in $170.95, 24 x 18 in $200.95, 30 x 23-1/4 in $326.95; a sitewide 20% off event ran October 5-13, 2026. Cutting Board Company listed the same sizes at the same price points (Oct 2026). One official-site owner paid $369 all-in for the 30 in board including shipping and tax.
Thresholds: at or below about $150 (the 18 x 12 in list price) it is defensible for a buyer with permanent counter space who accepts monthly oiling; $170-$200 (20 x 15 in / 24 x 18 in) is reasonable only with disciplined care, since the weight (up to 30 lb) and moisture sensitivity bite hardest in that range; about $327 is weak for most homes — the 30 x 23-1/4 in board is a countertop replacement, not a cutting board.
- End-grain boards (Wirecutter’s current picks) — the better choice when knife-friendliness and self-healing matter more than staying flat; Wirecutter’s own experience with an edge-grain Boos pick was a crack within a year. [3]
