Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

Genuinely inexpensive true-wireless earbuds with an integrated USB-A charging cable on the case, three tap-operated EQ presets and measured battery life above the advertised minimum. They suit music, podcasts, commuting and occasional workouts; skip them if you need active noise cancellation, low gaming latency, multipoint or consistently clear outdoor calls.

Strengths

  • SoundGuys measured 11 hours 4 minutes of continuous playback at its standardized level, above the stated 8+ hours; RTINGS measured about nine hours.
  • The case has the USB-A charging cable already attached, so there is no loose cable to carry and it recharges from older desktops, wall chargers and many vehicles.
  • Three factory EQ presets, including a Balanced option, without buying an app.
  • Each bud works alone for music or calls (Dual Connect), useful when the other is charging or you want an ear free.
  • Useful passive isolation and a stable fit; three tip sizes help find a seal.
  • No subscription, account or proprietary app required for listening, EQ or calls.

Weaknesses

  • No active noise cancellation; passive tips reduce chatter but not the low rumble of planes or buses.
  • High Bluetooth latency makes these a poor fit for rhythm games; JLab’s own panel lists Music Mode above 200 ms.
  • Microphones are muted and poorly isolated against strong wind and background noise, so outdoor call quality is unreliable.
  • No multipoint; Dual Connect means either bud alone, not two source devices paired at once.
  • The integrated USB-A cable is non-removable and needs a USB-A port or a converter; owners with USB-C-only chargers cannot plug it in directly.
  • Owners report buds that stop charging or fail to pair, and batteries that no longer hold charge after years.

Sound and fit

RTINGS describes the default JLab Signature profile as bass-emphasized but reasonably balanced, with enough vocal clarity for many genres, and SoundGuys found the three factory presets useful while warning that Bass Boost can overwhelm vocals. RTINGS found good reduction of mid-frequency voices but relatively little low-engine-rumble attenuation. The small case and light buds are comfortable, and SoundGuys especially liked the small fit with small tips; fit is anatomy-dependent, and the wrong tip size changes both bass response and perceived noise control.

Battery and charging

Measured battery life beat the advertised minimum in some tests: SoundGuys recorded 11 hours 4 minutes continuously at its own level, while RTINGS describes about nine hours with roughly three case charges. The case stores a 350 mAh cell and recharges through its integrated USB-A plug in about 2 h; each bud takes about 2.2 h. There is no verified battery-life guarantee, and lithium-polymer cells are integrated, so a worn-out battery usually means replacing an earbud or the whole set rather than a documented official cell service. A reset means forgetting the device in Bluetooth settings, inserting both buds in the case, quickly tapping each bud seven times, then re-pairing; JLab says to contact support if a bud will not light up after the procedure.

Calls, controls and connectivity

The microphones handle voices acceptably in a quiet room but are muted and poorly isolated against strong wind or background noise. SoundGuys reports triple tapping to change EQ occasionally being interpreted as a double tap and pausing music, and the left and right buds use different preset gestures, so checking the model guide beats tapping blindly. A SoundGuys reviewer notes the right earbud occasionally disconnected briefly and then recovered, and RTINGS flags high latency rather than chronic radio failure. In a pocket case, earwax and dirty charging contacts can cause apparent charging and connectivity failures; clean them gently only after unplugging and drying the buds.

Parts and running costs

There is no required subscription: listening, EQ and calls need no monthly account, and no scheduled eartip or case replacement is published. Electricity is negligible on paper: the two buds hold about 0.318 Wh and the case about 1.295 Wh, roughly 1.613 Wh total, and assuming 70% wall-to-battery efficiency a full system refill uses about 2.30 Wh, so 100 full refills a year is about 0.230 kWh, or $0.046 at an assumed $0.20 per kWh. The one real consumable is eartips: a $11.99 pack of JLab Cloud Foam universal tips every two years would allocate about $6 per year, though they are not certified to fit this model or close its case. A new $19.99 set used over a two-year warranty period allocates about $10 per year to acquisition, before any premature failures. JLab support suggested a replacement case or warranty claim in one owner discussion, but no consumer storefront SKU for a standalone case or earbud was found.

Is it worth it?

At $19.99 from Target or Best Buy in October 2026 it is a reasonable spare or a first pair if you want the old USB-A cable or have confirmed the fit. Below $12 for a sealed, warrantied set is attractive; from $12 to $16 it stays reasonable if you prefer the original cable or physical fit; from $17 to $20 it is acceptable only because a same-price GO POP+ and sometimes a GO Pop ANC offer more current conveniences; above $20 to $25, avoid the original unless newer alternatives are unavailable. An unauthorized or open-box offer with unclear battery age can be worse than a properly authorized sealed new pair. If you do not specifically need the old USB-A format, the direct successor GO POP+ adds Bluetooth 5.3, a USB-C cable, app controls and Be Aware for about $26.99 direct or $19.99 at Walmart, and is the stronger choice at equal cost.

Which model this is

This page covers the original JLab GO Air POP in black, identified at Best Buy as EBGAIRPOPRBLK124 (SKU 6472667). It is not the newer GO POP+, the GO Pop ANC, the earlier GO Air without POP, or any GO Air Sport. The original has an integrated USB-A plug on its charging case, Bluetooth 5.1 and three tap-operated EQ presets; the newer POP+ moves to USB-C, Bluetooth 5.3, a configurable app and Be Aware. JLab’s own product page now directs buyers to the successor, and an FAQ still states a roughly $25 original price, so confirm the SKU and seller before comparing offers.
