JLab GO Air POP: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-18
Summary
This is the original GO Air POP (EBGAIRPOPRBLK124), a budget true-wireless earbud whose case recharges through a built-in USB-A cable; owners most often report a bud that stops charging or fails to pair, batteries that wear out after years, a weak microphone in wind, and no ANC, multipoint or low-latency gaming mode. Running costs are tiny: no subscription, negligible electricity (about $0.046 a year by rated-cell arithmetic [1][2]), and one optional consumable — eartips. It is an attractive spare under $12, reasonable to $16, and hard to pick over the same-priced GO POP+ above $17 unless you specifically want the old USB-A cable.
Common problems and fixes
- One bud stops charging, lighting up or pairing — reported in December 2023 (solid white light, rarely pairing), again in May 2024 (hours charging, 10% level) and September 2026 (noncharging bud after years of use); fix by cleaning the contacts, then JLab’s seven-tap reset (forget the device, both buds in the case, tap each seven times, re-pair), and contact support if a bud never lights up. [15][16][17][3][4]
- Bud reconnects to the phone while docked — worn or misaligned case charging prongs were JLab’s explanation in one 2024 thread; check that the case LED reacts to insertion, clean and dry the tiny contacts, reseat both buds, and don’t force or sand the pins. [18][3]
- TWS sync failures / two separate devices — common enough that JLab publishes the reset above; owners report mixed results, and a reset will not fix a dead cell or broken contact. [3][4][15][17]
- Weak microphone in noise — voices acceptable in a quiet room, muted and poorly isolated against strong wind and background noise. [10]
- Touch-control misses — triple taps for EQ are occasionally read as double taps and pause music; left and right buds use different gesture maps. [10][5]
- Battery wear after years — older owners report cells that no longer hold charge; the cells are integrated with no official user-replacement service, so a worn battery means a new bud or set. [2][15]
- Non-removable USB-A cable — the case plugs straight into a USB-A port, so USB-C-only owners need an adapter, and JLab documents no user cable replacement. [1][2]
Warranty: two-year limited warranty for the original purchaser from an authorized dealer; the buyer pays shipping both ways, which can erase much of the benefit on a $19.99 item. [6][7][12]
Parts and consumables
- JLab Cloud Foam Universal Tips — $11.99 direct (October 2026), advertised for “most earbuds”, not certified to fit this model or close its case; not a required part. [8]
- Wall adapter — not included; use an existing 5 V USB-A supply. [1][2]
Yearly running cost
No subscription: listening, the three onboard EQ presets and calls need no monthly account, and JLab publishes no scheduled eartip or case replacement. [1][2][9]
Electricity from the rated cells: the two buds hold about 0.318 Wh combined, the case about 1.295 Wh (roughly 1.613 Wh total); assuming 70% wall-to-battery efficiency, one full system refill uses about 2.30 Wh from the outlet, so 100 full refills a year is about 0.230 kWh, or $0.046 at an assumed $0.20 per kWh. That is arithmetic from the rated cells, not a wall-meter measurement or a verified local electricity price. [1][2]
The only realistic consumable is eartips: a $11.99 pack of Cloud Foam tips replaced every two years allocates about $6 per year, though fit was never certified for this model. [8] A new $19.99 set kept for the two-year warranty period allocates about $10 per year to acquisition, before any premature failures. [6][12]
When it is a good buy
Store snapshots from October 2026: Target lists the original black model at $19.99 (regular $24.99) and Best Buy lists EBGAIRPOPRBLK124 at $19.99 (comparison price $26.99). [11][12]
- Under $12 for a sealed, warrantied set — a good spare. [12]
- $12–16 — still reasonable if you prefer the original USB-A cable or the physical fit. [1][12]
- $17–20 — acceptable only because the original’s cable or fit matter to you; at the same money the newer GO POP+ and sometimes a GO Pop ANC offer more current conveniences. [1][13][14]
- Above $20 — avoid the original unless the newer alternatives are unavailable. [13]
Alternatives: the direct successor GO POP+ ($19.99 at Walmart in black, $17.99 in some colors; $26.99 direct) adds a USB-C cable, Bluetooth 5.3, app controls and Be Aware — the stronger pick at equal cost unless you need the old USB-A format. [13] The GO Pop ANC at Target ($19.99 sale versus $31.99 regular in transparent neon green) adds ANC and app control with 24+ h total — the better choice when you want noise cancelling at the same price.
