Summary
JBL Xtreme 2 is a 2018 boombox-style Bluetooth speaker built for loud, bass-forward outdoor play, with IPX7 waterproofing and a 15-hour battery. Check the charger and battery health before you buy: it charges only from its included 19 V 3 A adapter, and owners report charging and battery failures on aging units.
Strengths
- Loud, bass-forward output from four drivers and two passive radiators.
- IPX7 waterproofing for pool and beach use, with a sealed rear port cover.
- Up to 15 hours of play time and JBL Connect+ linking of up to 100 speakers.
- A 3.5 mm aux input and 5 V/2 A USB charge-out for a phone.
- A speakerphone mic with noise and echo cancellation.
- An Editors’ Choice from PCMag for bass lovers.
Weaknesses
- Charging and battery failures are the most recurring owner reports, from units that will not turn on to blinking red LEDs and sudden shutdowns.
- It charges only from the included 19 V 3 A adapter, not over USB.
- Bluetooth 4.2 with SBC only, no aptX or AAC, and some video latency.
- No EQ or tone controls, and the bass-heavy tuning can sound boomy.
- The battery is not user-serviceable, and opening the unit voids the warranty.
- JBL has discontinued it, so parts and official support are limited.

Full research notes and sources
Sound and volume
Four drivers and two passive radiators drive 2 x 20 W RMS of Bi-amp power in AC mode. PCMag made it an Editors’ Choice and noted bass that reaches near-subwoofer depth without distortion at top volume, though it warned the heavy bass boost is not for purists. What Hi-Fi? praised controlled, coherent bass and good stereo imaging. SoundGuys rated it 7.8/10 and found the mids and highs lack clarity at times. Consumer Reports lab testing was cooler, describing middling sound with prominent, boomy bass and a congested midrange, and no EQ to fix it. CNET heard a modest bass improvement over the original and put it near JBL’s Link 300.
Battery, charging and repairs
The 36 Wh (3.7 V, 10,000 mAh) battery is rated for up to 15 hours and takes about 3.5 hours to charge from the included 19 V 3 A adapter. Playtime drops at high volume and when the USB charge-out is powering a phone. The most recurring owner reports describe units that will not turn on or charge, a blinking red charging LED, and sudden shutdowns on battery, sometimes after months or a few years of use. A 30-second hold on the power button, or the play/pause plus volume-up reset, can revive a unit that will not charge. JBL states the battery is not user-serviceable and opening the unit voids the warranty. The service manual documents a mid-production Bluetooth module change from CSR to Qualcomm QCC, with parts that differ by serial number, and one page lists a 5,200 mAh battery where the spec sheet says 10,000 mAh / 36 Wh. If you store it, JBL advises charging it at least once every three months.
Water resistance and upkeep
JBL warns against charging the speaker while it is wet. iFixit’s forum documents a flooded unit that worked only on the charger after it dried. Keep the cover closed, wipe the fabric grille, and check the charging port for lint.
Is it worth it?
JBL set the launch MSRP at $299.95. PCMag’s review-era listings had it at $199 at Walmart and $91 at Best Buy, and What Hi-Fi? tested it at £199 / $220. JBL’s US page listed it at $249.95 in October 2026 and showed it sold out. What Hi-Fi?’s page showed $199.99 at Best Buy and $159.77 at Walmart.
At $150 or less used or refurbished it is strong value if the battery and charger check out. Between $151 and $200 it is fair value, competing with newer JBL Charge and Flip models that add USB-C and better codecs. Above $200 it is weak value for a discontinued 2018 model.
