Summary

JBL Tune Buds are budget stemless true wireless earbuds with 10 mm drivers, ANC with Smart Ambient, four microphones, IP54 and up to 48 h of rated battery. Check the fit before you buy: multiple independent tests describe a hit-or-miss seal that decides how they sound and how well the ANC works.

Strengths

  • 10 mm drivers with a warm, bass-forward default tune and a full graphic EQ in the JBL Headphones app.
  • Up to 12 h per charge with ANC off (10 h with ANC on) and 48 h total from the case, per the spec sheet.
  • Smart Ambient adds Ambient Aware and TalkThru on top of ANC.
  • Four microphones with VoiceAware sidetone and multipoint for two devices.
  • IP54 splash and dust resistance at a 5.4 g per-earbud weight.
  • RTINGS scores them 7.8/10 for comfortable fit, battery life and EQ; SoundGuys MDAQS Timbre 4.9.

Weaknesses

  • ANC is poor to moderate, especially against bass rumble, in independent tests.
  • Fit and seal are inconsistent; comfort is the lowest-scoring area in SoundGuys’ testing.
  • No LDAC or aptX; only AAC and SBC, with LC3 planned but undated.
  • No default on-ear volume control; it must be remapped in the app.
  • One verified owner reports a bud failing after 6-12 months and says they would not buy again.
  • Bulky shell and a hollow, muffled microphone in RTINGS testing.

Sound and ANC

The default tune is warm and bass-forward: RTINGS measures bass emphasized 4 dB and treble slightly emphasized 1 dB, and most listeners in SoundGuys’ testing enjoy it out of the box. The app covers 32 Hz to 16 kHz with presets and a custom curve. ANC is the weak point: RTINGS calls it poor, especially against bass rumble, and SoundGuys describes poor isolation; PCMag calls it acceptable for the price. Passive soundstage is poor in RTINGS testing, and the microphone is adequate but hollow and muffled.

Battery and charging

The spec sheet rates 12 h per charge with ANC off and 10 h with ANC on, 48 h total (40 h with ANC on), talk time 6 h (ANC on) or 6.6 h (ANC off), and a 2 h charge from empty with Speed Charge giving 4 h in 15 min. Earbuds carry 70 mAh / 3.85 V cells, the case 750 mAh / 3.7 V. Charging is USB-C at 5 V 1 A.

Fit and comfort

Fit is the biggest risk. SoundGuys names fit and comfort the lowest-scoring area. Three eartip sizes are included. Consumer Reports notes possible pressure in the ear canal and incidental touch-control activation. IP54 covers splashes and dust, not submersion.

Codecs and app

Codecs are AAC and SBC only; LC3 is planned with no announced timeframe and LE Audio support is marked as available via OTA at a later stage. There is no LDAC or aptX. Multipoint covers two devices. The app adds EQ presets, a custom curve, touch control remapping, find-my-earbuds and Smart Audio & Video modes. There is no on-ear volume control by default; remap it in the app if you want it.

Value and alternatives

SoundGuys notes frequent sale prices around $70, at which the feature set is hard to beat. PCMag lists $99.95 (Sep 28, 2023). At $71 to $100, value is good if the fit works; compare against the Anker Soundcore Liberty 4 NC at $99.99, which adds LDAC and wireless charging. Above $100, value weakens because independent tests describe poor ANC and isolation next to better noise-cancelling models.

Which model this is

This page covers the JBL Tune Buds true wireless earbuds, model TUNE BUDS, with 10 mm drivers and IP54. Color variants include black, blue and white; BestBuy lists a blue variant SKU. Do not confuse them with the newer JBL Tune Buds 2 (2025), which is a separate model with adaptive ANC and different specs. The Amazon listing for the researched unit is ASIN B0C1QWWZR4.
