Summary
A tiny, waterproof clip-on Bluetooth speaker that clips to a backpack, belt loop or shower head, with a claimed 10-hour play time.
Strengths
- Tiny and light — 222 g with an integrated carabiner that clips to a backpack, belt loop or shower head.
- Battery life above the 10-hour claim in two independent tests: 16 h 11 min and 18 h at moderate volume.
- Loud enough for small gatherings and good with podcasts and vocals.
- A 3.5 mm aux input and a built-in microphone are unusual in this class.
- Simple front controls and a grippy rubber base.
Weaknesses
- Thin, bass-light sound that turns harsh and tinny at high volume, with some distortion at maximum.
- Bluetooth 4.1 with no high-quality codecs such as aptX or LDAC.
- Charges over micro-USB, not USB-C.
- No bundled aux cable and no speaker-to-speaker pairing — both steps back from the Clip 2.
- A superseded generation that is hard to find new, so a new-in-box unit competes with better-specified current models.

Sound quality
TechGearLab describes the sound as relatively thin, lacking bass power, with harsh, tinny high frequencies at high volume, though fuller than most super-compact speakers. SoundGuys’ frequency-response chart shows a hard low-end drop-off, reasonable mid and vocal reproduction, and weak high-end clarity. At maximum volume the 3 W driver strains and the sound gets blown out. Podcasts and vocals are what it does well; owners report it is loud enough for small gatherings.
Battery life
JBL claims up to 10 hours of playback from the 1,000 mAh battery, and two independent tests beat that: SoundGuys measured 16 hours 11 minutes at a constant 75 dB output, TechGearLab measured 18 hours. Those figures come from constant moderate output, not high volume — SoundGuys warns that higher outdoor volumes cut runtime, and real-world outdoor use runs shorter than the test numbers. Charging takes about 3 hours over micro-USB.
Charging, connections and waterproofing
The Clip 3 charges over micro-USB, not USB-C — SoundGuys calls micro-USB in 2026 an anachronism and a practical inconvenience. A 3.5 mm aux jack sits under a water-sealed rubber flap, but JBL dropped the integrated aux cable the Clip 2 had, so a wired connection means buying a cable separately. Speaker-to-speaker daisy-chaining that the Clip 2 supported is gone too.
Is it worth it?
The Clip 3 is a 2018 design competing in a 2026 market. SoundGuys lists a $49 USD list price and notes it sold for roughly $39–$89 depending on fluctuations; TechGearLab lists $50 USD, and MajorHiFi’s 2018 review references about $60. SoundGuys calls the Clip 3 hard to come by these days and points buyers to the Clip 4. At $30 or less — used, open-box or clearance — it is a defensible tiny rugged speaker for showers and travel, with the caveats of micro-USB and no daisy-chaining. Pay more and the case weakens: the current Clip 4 and Clip 5 add USB-C, newer Bluetooth and an IP67 rating, though they drop the aux jack and microphone. A new Clip 3 at a premium over a current model is weak value.
