Instant Pot Duo Nova 7-in-1: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-18
Summary
The Duo Nova 80 is the 8-quart member of Instant’s 2019 Duo Nova line: 1200 W, 14 one-touch programs, and a quick-release lid button that re-seals automatically when the lid closes. What usually goes wrong is grains and steaming rather than hardware failure: three independent reviewers landed on inconsistent rice and soggy vegetables, and the inner pot has no handles. Recurring cost is the sealing ring (manual says replace every 12 months), with no prices reported in the sources read, so no yearly figure can be computed. It is a strong buy at or below about $90 — above roughly $130 the current Duo 8QT is safer on parts and support, because owners say Instant no longer makes this line.
Common problems and fixes
- Inner pot has no handles — the stainless pot is heavy when full and hard to lift out; flagged by TechRadar and Tom’s Guide. [8][10]
- Pressure release is loud — TechRadar measured 75 dB, about a toilet flush, one of the noisier Instant Pots tested. [8]
- Exterior and lid get very hot — the stainless exterior and lid reach high surface temperatures in use; TechRadar’s unit measured 113 °F / 45 °C on the lid during a 6-hour slow cook. Keep hands and counters clear. [8]
- Steam rack lets small vegetables fall through — the rack is only useful for larger items; small vegetables drop into the water. [8]
- Steam escaping or valve not sealing — owners report steam coming out of the sides of the lid and a steam-release valve that will not seal. Fixes are reseating or replacing the sealing ring and cleaning the float valve and anti-block shield; a warped sealing-ring rack or failed pressure sensor goes to Customer Care, which points to a return-to-base service model. When it is a good buy
- $90 or less — strong value. Kroger lists the 8-quart at $89.99 (Kroger, October 2026), undercutting the current Duo 8QT at $129.99 on instantpot.com while adding the auto-seal lid. [13][11]
- $91–110 — fair to good. Still below Instant’s current Duo 8QT and the Duo Plus 8QT at $159.99; verify stock, warranty terms and that the unit is new rather than clearance. [11]
- $111–130 — weak to fair. The current-generation Duo 8QT at $129.99 is directly comparable and comes with a live product page, current manuals and a current parts channel. [11]
- Above $130 — poor value for the 8-quart, because newer Instant models with more programs and current support cost the same or slightly more. The 10-quart is the exception at $149.99 (Best Buy, October 2026) as the only way to get that capacity in this line, but it was listed sold out. [5][11]
Alternatives: the current Instant Pot Duo 8QT ($129.99, instantpot.com, October 2026) is the better buy above roughly $130, with the same 1200 W / 8-quart core and live parts support [11]. The Duo Plus 8QT ($159.99, instantpot.com, October 2026) adds a sous vide program and more programs when you want current-generation support [11].
