Summary

A 6-quart 9-in-1 multi-cooker that pressure-cooks, slow-cooks, steams, sautés, makes yogurt and cake, and adds a sous vide setting the base Duo lacks. Check the inner pot before you buy: it has no handles, which Tom’s Guide, Serious Eats and Pressure Cooking Today all flag, and you will be lifting it full of stew.

Strengths

  • The steam release is measurably quieter: Tom’s Guide measured 75 dB max against almost 85 dB for the Rio.
  • The redesigned lid vents steam away from items above, and its all-plastic gray exterior replaces the hot metal lid on other Instant Pot models.
  • Nine cooking functions cover pressure cooking, slow cooking, rice, steam, sauté, yogurt, sous vide, cake and keep warm in one pot.
  • The cooking pot, lid, sealing ring and steam rack are dishwasher-safe; the base wipes clean with a damp cloth.
  • Owners report the lid auto-seals as you close it, and that inner pots and sealing rings from an older Duo fit the Duo Plus.
  • Tom’s Guide recommends the model and Serious Eats lists the Duo Plus among the best Instant Pots.

Weaknesses

  • “Whisper quiet” is an overstatement: Pressure Cooking Today says the quick release still makes “a decent amount of noise”.
  • The inner pot has no handles, which Tom’s Guide, Serious Eats and Pressure Cooking Today all flag for handling hot food.
  • The sous vide setting has no temperature adjustment.
  • The float valve hides under a small plug on the outside of the lid.
  • Owner reports include steam escaping from the side during pressure cooking, a lid stuck in the lock position and a loose piece under the steam-release cover.
  • This V4 drops the ladle, spoon and mini-mitts that past Duo Plus versions included.

Noise and the steam release

Instant Pot publishes no decibel figure for the Whisper-Quiet release, so the number to trust is the one Tom’s Guide measured: 75 dB at most during a quick release, against almost 85 dB for the Rio. Pressure Cooking Today calls “whisper quiet” a stretch and notes the quick release still makes “a decent amount of noise” — quieter, yes; silent, no.

Pressing the remote button lifts the release, and the cover’s silicone gasket and grooves diffuse the venting steam so it leaves through two exterior vents instead of blasting upward. Pressure Cooking Today credits the redesigned lid with venting steam away from items above. The tradeoff is that the gasket is not removable, which makes the cover harder to clean.

Cooking performance and the display

Tom’s Guide cooked chocolate fudge cake, soup, legumes, steamed veggies, crème brûlée, rice and sautéed onions in the Whisper-Quiet and recommended the model. TechRadar timed a pot of rice at 7 minutes preheat, 22 minutes cooking and 10 minutes natural release — 39 minutes start to finish. Pressure Cooking Today identifies this as the fifth version of the Duo Plus line and praises the easy-to-read button layout.

The 25 programs are guided presets with a dot-matrix display that walks through each cooking step, not 25 distinct methods, and the 30-minute rice default means you will reach for the dial the first few times. Serious Eats, updated in July 2026, lists the Duo Plus among the best Instant Pots and quotes a release valve “very quiet (one may even say, ‘WhisperQuiet’)”.

Care, parts and owner reports

The cooking pot, lid, sealing ring and steam rack go in the dishwasher; the base only gets a damp cloth. Clean the anti-block shield under the lid after each use, check the float valve and steam release valve for food debris, and expect the silicone ring to absorb odors — Instant Pot suggests separate rings for savory and sweet cooking.

Descaling supplies and replacement sealing rings are the only running costs; there is no subscription and the recipe app is free. The ring is a wear item and Instant Pot recommends replacing it only with Genuine Instant Pot rings, with no wider manufacturer parts catalog. The one-year limited warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship from authorized retailers and needs proof of purchase.

Owner reports are mixed. Praise clusters around the genuinely quieter release and the lid that auto-seals as you close it; one owner reports older Duo inner pots and sealing rings fit the Duo Plus. The complaints are anecdotal signals, not defect rates: steam escaping from the side during pressure cooking, a lid stuck in the lock position, a loose gray piece under the Whisper Quiet cover, and a condensation cup that arrived with holes according to Home Depot reviewers. One YouTube reviewer, six months in, returned the first unit and flagged “one surprising flaw”. A separate thread reports coating flaking on the 8-quart V4 from the same SKU family — whether that touches the 6-quart is unanswered.

Is it worth it?

Instant Pot’s own site shows a regular price of $139.99. Tom’s Guide listed £129 from Instant Pot UK in 2024, and TechRadar’s 2021 review carried a $119.99 list price for the 6-quart. At $139.99 the WhisperQuiet is a fair buy for a household that wants sous vide and cake settings the base Duo lacks and values a quieter release. At or below $120 it is strong value. Above $160 the Instant Pot Pro — handles on the inner pot — is the easier recommendation. Wirecutter’s updated pick at this size is the Rio 6-quart, a different model with a different feature set.

Which model this is

This page covers the Instant Pot Duo Plus 6QT with Whisper-Quiet Steam Release, V4 — sold at retail as the Instant Pot 6 Qt 9-in-1 WhisperQuiet, SKU 112-0169-01, UPC 810028585171. The Amazon listing for the model is ASIN B09MZTP44L. Do not merge it with the base Duo (7-in-1), the Pro, or the Rio; the control panels and feature sets differ.
