Sound and comfort
Comfort is a recurring strength, with PC Gamer reporting excellent comfort and durability after months of use. The trade-offs are real: TechRadar found the lows can lose definition and get muddy on some music and film dialogue, and the leatherette cushions run warmer than breathable designs such as the SteelSeries Arctis and Logitech G Pro. The headset is stereo only, with no virtual surround processing in the box, so buyers who want simulated surround should look elsewhere.
Build and repairability
The frame is aluminum, and both the cable and microphone are detachable, so a broken cable can be replaced for about $10 instead of replacing the headset. HyperX lists a 2-year warranty. CNET notes the Cloud Alpha does not come with replaceable earcups, unlike some other HyperX models, and no manufacturer parts catalog or service-part availability beyond the detachable cable and microphone was found. Maintenance guidance such as cleaning and pad replacement was not published on the pages read.
HyperX lists a $69.99 sale price against a $99.99 MSRP, shown as Sale 30%. Launch reviews placed it at $99. At the time of PC Gamer’s review page, Walmart listed $59.95 and $79.99, Target $69.99, and Buydig $89.99. At or below $70 it is strong value for a comfortable, durable wired stereo headset with a detachable mic and cable and a 2-year warranty; from $70 to $100 it is good value; above $100 buyers should compare against current alternatives. Wirecutter’s current best-gaming-headset guide does not recommend the original Cloud Alpha and lists the newer Cloud Alpha 2 among models it considers too expensive.
