Summary

A 16-inch everyday laptop with an AMD Ryzen 7 8840U, 16GB of soldered memory, a 512GB SSD and a 2K display, aimed at students, families and home-office work. Check the screen before you buy: it covers only 62.5% of sRGB and is not bright enough for direct sun.

Strengths

  • Multi-core performance keeps pace with newer Ryzen AI systems.
  • Sustained 3D rendering led LaptopMedia’s entire comparison group.
  • LaptopMedia measured 8 hours 39 minutes of local video playback.
  • Comfortable keyboard and a roomy 16:10 workspace.
  • Practical port selection for a mid-range 16-inch laptop.
  • Build quality feels better than the price suggests.

Weaknesses

  • Memory is soldered LPDDR5, so there is no upgrade path.
  • Only a single M.2 slot limits storage expansion.
  • The 62.5% sRGB screen is narrow for photo or video work.
  • 300 nits is dim for bright rooms and outdoors.
  • At 16 NPU TOPS it misses the Copilot+ threshold.
  • The power button sits on the keyboard deck and is easy to hit by mistake.

Performance and thermals

The Ryzen 7 8840U is a Zen 4 part, not the newer Zen 5-based Ryzen AI 7 350. LaptopMedia found its multi-core performance competitive with newer Ryzen AI systems, though single-core trails the Ryzen AI 7 350. Sustained 3D rendering led every comparison machine, including an Acer Swift Edge 16 with the same processor, which points to effective thermal tuning. Games are not the target: the panel’s 31.3ms response time is slow for that.

Battery life

HP quotes up to 32-34 hours of video playback, measured with the display at 200 nits and headphones or speakers. LaptopMedia’s own local-video test at 180 nits ran 8 hours 39 minutes, and ZDNET describes roughly 10 real hours and well over a full day of mixed use. The gap is testing method, not a defect, but treat any single figure with suspicion.

Display

The 2K 1920 × 1200 panel gives plenty of vertical space for documents and split windows. Its weak points are color and brightness: 62.5% sRGB is narrow for creative work, and HP markets the resolution without making the limited coverage obvious. Notebookcheck measured the Intel variant’s brightness at 300.9 cd/m², matching HP’s 300-nit figure, and owners call the gamut mediocre for anything beyond documents and streaming.

Upgrades and repairability

This is a closed machine. The 16GB of LPDDR5-6400 is soldered and the single M.2 slot rules out adding a second drive. HP provides a Maintenance and Service Guide for the 16-bc1xxx series, but the battery is not presented as user-replaceable. The OmniBook 5 also does not carry MIL-STD-810H durability certification, which is reserved for the OmniBook 7 and select OmniBook X and Ultra models; the standard warranty is one year. The only recurring cost is a USB-C PD charger if the bundled 65W unit is lost, since there are no proprietary consumables.

Price and value

HP did not document a US price for the AMD configuration, so judge it by this band: at $500-$700 the package of multi-core performance, battery life, keyboard and ports is solid value; $700-$900 is fair; $900-$1,200 is weak; and above $1,200 it is poor. For context, the Intel Core Ultra 7 variant carried an MSRP of $1,199.99 and sold for $500-$800, with a Black Friday low of $479. ZDNET saw it at $649 at HP in January 2026, and PCWorld reported $699 at B&H in May 2026, down from $899. If the AMD model is priced near the Intel one, it is the more sensible buy.

Which model this is

This page covers the HP OmniBook 5 LaptopAI 16-ch0765nr. The exact model number does not appear in HP’s own results, so it is best treated as a regional or retailer SKU for the 16-bc1000 series AMD Ryzen 7 build; the closest documented SKU, 16-bc1047nr, lists the same key specifications. HP’s support page identifies the processor as the AMD Ryzen 7 8840U. Do not mix it with the Intel Core Ultra or Snapdragon OmniBook 5 variants, which use different chips and, in reviews, different performance. The 2026 refresh uses a Ryzen AI 5 430, a different machine again.
