Summary

A compact 65% wired mechanical keyboard with a full aluminum body and tactile HyperX Aqua switches, made for players who want dedicated arrow keys without giving up desk space. Check the layout and the cable before you buy: it drops about 40 keys and leans on Fn combinations, and it is wired-only.

Strengths

  • The aluminum body flexes under nothing, and reviewers found the case rigid.
  • HyperX Aqua switches feel smooth; owners rate them above Cherry MX equivalents.
  • The 65% layout keeps dedicated arrow keys while clearing desk space.
  • Per-key RGB is bright and easy to tune from the software.
  • Three onboard profiles and 1000 Hz polling make it easy to move between machines.

Weaknesses

  • Wired only; there is no Bluetooth or Wi-Fi option.
  • The 65% layout drops about 40 keys and pushes the rest onto Fn combinations.
  • Switches are soldered, so there is no hot-swap path to change them.
  • NGENUITY is functional but a notch below Razer, Logitech and Corsair software.
  • The recessed USB-C port can fight thicker cables and extenders.
  • Stock keycaps can shine with use, and the spacebar and backspace sound louder than the other keys.

Build and feel

The case is full aircraft-grade aluminum, and Tom’s Hardware found no flex in it, calling the board “extremely well built” with “great feeling switches.” The HyperX Aqua switches are tactile, with a bump you can feel through the 1.8 mm actuation point. TechGearLab measured an operating force of 48.23 gf, a startup force of 35 gf and a bottom-out force of 56 gf, plus 48 dBa of typing noise from two feet away. The double-shot PBT keycaps print their secondary functions on the sides, so the tops stay clean.

Owners back the feel. In r/buildapc one called the switches “waaaaaaay smoother than cherry mx” and said the “solid aluminum base has HEFT”; in r/HyperX another rated the build “Phenomenal” and the HyperX switches above Cherry MX.

Layout and software

The 65% deck keeps dedicated arrows plus Page Up/Down, Home and Delete, and removes about 40 keys versus a full-size board; the missing ones sit behind Fn combinations. It is wired only, with a braided detachable USB-C cable, and the port is recessed deep enough that some cables or extenders may not seat. NGENUITY handles remapping, macros and per-key RGB and stores 3 profiles on the board, but PCMag and Tom’s Hardware both place it a notch below the big-three software. The board is not hot-swappable, so swapping switches means soldering.

Price and value

HyperX launched the Alloy Origins 65 in April 2022 at $99.99, with a 2-year warranty. Tom’s Hardware saw it discounted to $59.99–$79.99 at retailers around its June 2022 review, and TechGearLab listed it at $110 in March 2025. The aluminum build and switch feel hold up well below $80; above about $120 you are paying for materials while rivals add wireless and hot-swap. There is no subscription and no consumable to replace. The only upkeep is cleaning the keycaps and, when the board misbehaves, resetting it by holding Left Alt, Space and Fn together for 5 seconds; iFixit lists LED checks and a factory reset as the first troubleshooting steps.

Which model this is

This covers the HyperX Alloy Origins 65 in US layout, SKU 56R64AA#ABA, with tactile HyperX Aqua switches. HyperX sells it under HP’s gaming line. Do not confuse it with the full-size Alloy Origins, the TKL Alloy Origins Core, the 60% Alloy Origins 60, or the newer hot-swappable Alloy Origins 2 65.
