Summary

HP’s entry-level 14-inch Windows laptop for 2026: the 14-dq6xxx family built around an Intel N150, 4GB of soldered RAM and 128GB of UFS storage, aimed at students, parents and light home use. Check the memory before you buy — HP’s own support page says the RAM slot is not user accessible, and owners on r/laptops warn that 4GB is not enough for Windows 11 in 2026.

Strengths

  • Light at about 3.24 lb, in a plastic chassis HP says uses at least 11% post-consumer recycled plastic.
  • HP claims up to 11 hours of video playback from the 41 Wh battery, and owners repeatedly praise the battery life.
  • Fast Charge tops the battery up to 50% in about 45 minutes.
  • Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4, plus a USB-C port that carries DisplayPort 1.2.
  • A 1-year Microsoft 365 Personal subscription with 1TB of cloud storage is included on many retail listings.
  • Six US color variants, from Natural Silver to Pale Rose Gold, at a budget price.

Weaknesses

  • The 4GB of RAM is soldered and not user accessible, and it is the most common complaint in owner reports and r/laptops threads.
  • The 1366 × 768 TN panel is rated 250 nits and 62.5% sRGB; How-To Geek calls the resolution “straight out of the netbook era”.
  • Windows 11 in S mode blocks apps outside the Microsoft Store until you switch out, and owners report being surprised by that.
  • RAM and storage cannot be upgraded after purchase; this is a sealed budget device.

RAM and storage: soldered down

HP’s support page for the family says the memory slot is not user accessible, and a Newegg third-party spec for the exact 14-dq6101dx says “Soldered on board” with a 4GB maximum. In the r/laptops thread on this exact laptop, one top comment reads “8gb the baseline”, another predicts the N150 “will slow down over the next year or so when windows updates make windows harder to run on budget chips”, and a third states “4GB RAM simply isn’t enough as of 2026”. The 128GB of UFS storage is not described by HP as user-replaceable in any source read, so plan around the soldered pair for the life of the machine.

Screen and chassis

The 14-inch panel is a 1366 × 768 TN unit rated 250 nits and 62.5% sRGB, so expect weak viewing angles and muted colors. How-To Geek’s deal write-up calls the resolution “straight out of the netbook era”, and Best Buy’s owner summaries cite “a desire for improved screen quality”. Build quality is a family-level signal: Consumer Reports described the older 2022 HP 14 (DQ2053CL) as “quite plasticy with a bit of flex” and “hollow” when tapped, not a measurement on this unit. At 3.24 lb and 0.71 in thin, it slips into a backpack easily.

Battery life: a claim, not a measurement

HP rates the 41 Wh battery at up to 11 hours of video playback and up to 7 hours 30 minutes of wireless streaming, and Fast Charge reaches 50% in about 45 minutes. Nobody has published an instrumented measurement of this exact N150/4GB configuration. Treat HP’s 11 hours as a best-case marketing number, not a promise. No failure-rate or reliability statistics exist for this model.

S mode and the Microsoft 365 year

The laptop ships in Windows 11 S mode, which restricts software installation to the Microsoft Store; HP community threads and Reddit show owners surprised they cannot install non-Store apps. Switching out to Windows 11 Home is a community debate, and Microsoft’s own guidance is that it does not slow the laptop down — a claim repeated in the S-mode threads says otherwise. Most retail listings include a 1-year Microsoft 365 Personal subscription with 1TB of cloud storage, a genuine perk at this end of the market. Older HP Stream 14 owners with 4GB describe Windows 11 in S mode as slow on r/computers; that signal is from a different, older family, not this N150 unit. The keyboard carries a Copilot key, and the single USB-C port handles data and DisplayPort 1.2 but not charging.

Repairs and running costs

This is a sealed budget device: the RAM is soldered, and HP does not describe the UFS storage as user-replaceable in any source read. There is no published failure rate for this model, so treat long-term reliability as unknown rather than proven. Warranty is 1 year, with HP Care Pack extended protection at checkout. Running costs after the included year: a Microsoft 365 Personal renewal, plus an SD card or external storage for the 128GB of UFS and a USB-C hub if you need more than one USB-C device.

Is it worth it?

At $149.99-$159.99 it is a defensible single-purpose machine for a student or a parent handling banking, email and streaming, particularly with Microsoft 365 included — Best Buy’s Honey Lavender sat at $149.99, and How-To Geek’s May 2025 deal coverage had the N150 at $159.99, marked down from $219.99. Between $201 and $265 it is fair but shoppable against rivals: Best Buy’s Sky Blue was $229.99 and a Labor Day deal hit $264.99. At Staples’ $379.99 or Best Buy’s $349.99 list price, the 4GB/768p/S-mode package is hard to recommend when HP’s own customizable 14t-dq600 fixes the RAM complaint with 8GB for more money, or when the 2026 ep-series offers faster chips at $539.99. Buy it cheap, keep the task list short, and switch out of S mode if you need non-Store software.

Which model this is

This page covers the HP Laptop 14-dq6xxx family, the 2026 retail refresh of the 14-d6000 series. US retail variants include the 14-dq6011dx, 14-dq6101dx (Natural Silver), 14-dq6102dx (Sky Blue), 14-dq6103dx (Willow Green), 14-dq6104dx (Honey Lavender), 14-dq6105dx (Pale Rose Gold) and a 14-dq6103ds Snowflake White touchscreen bundle with Microsoft 365. Do not merge it with the HP 14-ep0000/ep1000 series (Intel Core Ultra or Core 3 and 5 U-series chips) or the older 14-dq0xxx Celeron/Pentium models. Third-party listings sometimes claim DDR5 RAM, eMMC storage or a 4.4 GHz turbo for these models; HP’s official documentation says DDR4-3200, UFS and 3.6 GHz, so treat those pages as errors. The Amazon listing this page tracks is ASIN B0GBX8HRTC; the exact retail variant behind it could not be confirmed without Amazon, which was out of scope.
