Honeywell HPA300: problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-05

Summary

No failure mode dominates owner reports on this console; what owners complain about is noise, running cost and fiddly servicing. Every instrumented test measured it louder at its top settings than the machines it competes with, and its annual cost ranked last in its comparison groups: $132 a year in filters per Consumer Reports, $154 per FilterScored, about $193 per AirQualityNest, and roughly $221.75 a year if you stick to genuine Honeywell cartridges at Honeywell’s own prices. It is worth buying well under $200 as a proven 465 sq. ft. particle remover, but the remaining retailer listings sat in the $240-250 band in October 2026 and the unit is discontinued by the manufacturer, so above that band the current-generation Honeywell HPA5300B is the better purchase.

Common problems and fixes

Parts and consumables

Yearly running cost

Filters, on Honeywell’s own schedule: Filter R once a year and Pre-Filter A every three months. At Honeywell’s store prices in October 2026 that is one HRF-R3 3-pack at $89.95 plus four HRF-A300 4-packs at $32.95 each, which comes to about $221.75 a year. Published estimates are lower — $132 at Consumer Reports, $154 at FilterScored and about $193 at AirQualityNest, which modelled roughly $45 for the HEPA side and roughly $25 per pre-filter change — and the gap tracks genuine versus off-brand cartridges, so any single figure needs its filter assumption stated. Tom’s Guide quoted $34 for a replacement set of three HEPA filters, the lowest per-unit figure found. [2] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]

Electricity sits on top of that: 1.002 kWh per 24 hours on the middle setting as Tom’s Guide measured it, with an estimate of upwards of $40 a year; Consumer Reports lists $95 a year; AirQualityNest uses about $4 a month. FilterScored puts five-year cost of ownership at $1,038 including filters. [2] [4] [5] [6]

When it is a good buy

Retailer listings read in October 2026: $242.49 at Home Depot, listed out of stock; $249.99 at AirQualityNest; $249 at FilterScored; $250.00 at Consumer Reports. Tom’s Guide noted the unit was often nearer the $200 mark back in 2022. Honeywell’s own store marks the HPA300 discontinued along with the free-pre-filter bundle, and WebstaurantStore lists it as no longer available, so expect remnant or second-hand stock rather than a normal retail shelf.
