Summary

Strengths

  • AHAM Verifide and ENERGY STAR certified, with zero ozone.
  • A 5-year limited warranty, longer than most small purifiers offer.
  • Tiny footprint, so it fits on a nightstand or desk.
  • Replacement Filter O is sold by Honeywell and by third parties.
  • Sleep mode dims the lights and quiets the fan for a bedroom.

Weaknesses

  • Covers only 110 sq ft, and CADR is low at 71-79 cfm.
  • No auto mode, air-quality sensor, app, Wi-Fi or remote.
  • Public owner feedback is nearly nonexistent.
  • The washable pre-filter has to be cleaned every 2-4 weeks.

Filters and running costs

The Filter O HEPA cartridge is replaced every 9-12 months and the pre-filter is cleaned every 2-4 weeks. Consumer Reports puts annual filter cost at $53 and annual electricity at $12, against measured energy use of 72 kWh a year. Replacement Filter O is sold by Honeywell and by third parties, so you are not locked into one supplier.

Is it worth it?

Honeywell Store lists the HPA120B and HPA120W at $74.95, and Target and Shipt have shown it on sale at $59.99 from $74.99. Up to about $75 it is a reasonable small-room pick for the certification, the 5-year warranty and the footprint. Above $100 the coverage and feature set look weak next to larger purifiers.

Which model this is

This page covers the Honeywell HPA120 series, sold as the HPA120B (black) and HPA120W (white), ASIN B00LG8BQAI. Do not confuse it with the smaller HPA020B or the larger HPA100, HPA200 and HPA300 consoles. Despite some listings, there is no Turbo setting on this model: the manual lists three cleaning levels only.
