Summary
A three-pan hybrid set — 8-inch, 10-inch and 12-inch tri-ply stainless fry pans, each with a tempered-glass lid — that pairs a laser-etched steel surface with a ceramic nonstick sitting in the valleys. The thing to check before buying: the “lifetime warranty” covers manufacturing defects only, not the scratches and coating wear that dominate owner complaints.
Strengths
- Consumer Reports rates cooking evenness and nonstick durability excellent, reporting the surface survived 2,000 steel-wool strokes.
- Lab testing found very good food release, and CNET scored the 10-inch skillet 8.4/10.
- The magnetic base works on induction and the pans are oven-safe to 900°F.
- Metal utensils are tolerated, so the surface does not need babying.
- Owners repeatedly praise even heat and easy cleanup.
- Three common pan sizes with lids cover most stovetop jobs in one purchase.
Weaknesses
- The coating still wears: owners report food sticking in the valleys and on the steel ridges after months of use.
- The “lifetime warranty” excludes scratches, cosmetic wear and normal wear, which is the core of the owner backlash.
- Searing is weaker than plain stainless, and the nonstick valleys stop you building fond.
- The exposed stainless rim and base stain easily, and dishwasher use can dull the finish.
- Some owners report refund friction, including shipping charges and long waits.

What the hybrid surface actually does
The surface is the whole idea: laser-etched hexagonal steel peaks with a ceramic nonstick in the valleys, bonded over a tri-ply aluminum core. In lab testing it holds up better than the “gimmick” takes suggest. Consumer Reports scored the HexClad Hybrid pan excellent for cooking evenness and for nonstick durability, withstanding 2,000 strokes of steel wool, with very good food release. CNET spent a month with the 10-inch skillet and gave it 8.4/10: it released food almost as well as a dedicated nonstick, heated evenly and tolerated metal utensils.
The catch is that it is still a coated pan. WIRED tested the 12-inch fry pan and the 3.3-quart deep saute for a month and rated the line 5/10: the pans heat evenly but are not truly nonstick — you still need oil, and food sticks to the steel ridges — and not truly stainless, because hard searing risks the coating. WIRED also found the curved handle awkward to grip and hot. The nonstick valleys mean you cannot build fond the way you can in a plain stainless pan.
Warranty and coating wear
HexClad markets a lifetime warranty, but its own FAQ says scratches, cosmetic wear and normal wear are not covered, and that surface imperfections over time count as normal. That gap is the most common owner complaint about the brand. Owner threads describe food sticking after months, surface marks, and warranty or refund claims denied or delayed, with some reporting shipping charges and weeks-long waits. These are self-selected anecdotes, not a measured failure rate, so treat the warranty as covering manufacturing defects only — not the inevitable dulling of a nonstick surface.
Care and seasoning
HexClad asks you to wash the pans before first use, season with a teaspoon of oil on medium-low heat for 2-3 minutes, then cook at lower temperatures than you would with other pans. Medium heat on HexClad approximates medium-high on other brands, which is counterintuitive if you are used to cranking the burner. Hand-wash with a soft sponge and warm soapy water, soak for 10-15 minutes for a deep clean, and re-season afterward. The pans are dishwasher-safe, but regular dishwasher use can dull or darken the finish.
Is it worth it?
Value depends on what you pay. At or under $300 for the 6-piece set it is a strong buy for someone who wants three lidded pans in one purchase and accepts a coating-based nonstick; the measured evenness and durability support the price better than the marketing does. HexClad lists the set at $399 against a stated $532 value (HexClad, 2026), which lands in fair-to-good territory. At or above the stated full value, dedicated stainless plus a separate nonstick pan is the more practical pairing, since you get better searing and can build fond. The Kitchn listed the single 8-inch pan at $129, on sale for $105, and WIRED listed the standalone 12-inch at $179 in August 2024.
