Summary
A natural-colored PLA spool for everyday FDM printing, with a 180–220°C nozzle range and no heated bed required. Check the color and storage before you buy: “natural” is the maker’s color name rather than a certified clear filament, and older HATCHBOX PLA spools have gone brittle in storage.
Strengths
- Beginner-friendly: 180–220°C range, no mandatory heated bed, low-warp PLA for open-format printers.
- Neutral look: subdued natural tone for models, prototypes and light-diffusing parts.
- Clear diameter spec: stated ±0.03 mm tolerance for 1.75 mm filament.
- Documented support: troubleshooting, storage and bed guidance plus a direct defective-roll contact and RMA process.
- Owner experiences: 2020 Reddit users reported consistent HATCHBOX PLA results, including white, gray and black rolls.
- Price: $21.99 on the HATCHBOX store (SpoolPrices recorded six $21.99 observations, Sep 4–12, 2026).
Weaknesses
- “Natural” is not optically clear; clarity depends on wall count, infill, seams and print profile.
- PLA creeps and deforms well below its melt temperature; avoid mechanical service and hot environments.
- No current exact-Natural mechanical or thermal data: HATCHBOX says detailed technical data are not currently available.
- Aging risk: 2018 spools (Transparent Orange) became brittle; a 2020 translucent blue roll snapped in a Bowden path.
- Bed adhesion is not automatic; the FAQ recommends heat, tape or glue when prints will not stick. Spool geometry for AMS and dry boxes is also uncertain, since the 225 g empty-reel mass does not settle current dimensions, and HATCHBOX has no spool take-back or recycling program.

Printing and bed adhesion
The published profile is a range, not a single certified point: 180–220°C at the nozzle, starting around 180°C at 40 mm/s, with 100% part cooling after the first few layers. The product page says no heated bed is required, while the FAQ separately recommends a heated bed, painter’s tape or glue stick when adhesion is poor. Treat the no-bed claim as a capability statement and tune the first layer and bed surface for your machine.
Color, clarity and heat
“Natural” is the maker’s color name, not a certified clear-filament standard. Whether a print looks translucent or cloudy depends on wall thickness, infill, seams and air gaps, and the company publishes no CIELAB or transmission data. PLA also softens in a hot car or dark enclosure, and HATCHBOX cautions against mechanical service and elevated temperatures. For white lithophanes or color-critical pale parts, the opaque White PLA at $21.99 is a different, non-interchangeable color.
Storage and aging
Keep the spool in its bag with desiccant and away from sun and heat. Owner reports describe older HATCHBOX PLA becoming brittle after years of storage, including 2018 spools of Transparent Orange and a 2020 translucent blue roll that snapped in a Bowden path. A 2023 AMS owner reported older brittle rolls breaking during repeated multicolor load and unload cycles. These are family-level caution signals, not measured failure rates for fresh Natural stock, and moisture, age and storage conditions were not independently diagnosed. If a roll pops or hisses, contact HATCHBOX or the selling shop with order details and photos rather than assuming a manufacturing defect.
Running costs and support
At the posted $21.99/kg, raw material costs $0.02199 per gram: about $2.20 for a 100 g part and $5.50 for a 250 g part, before supports, failures, freight and tax. One spool delivered costs $26.98 including $4.99 shipping, or $0.02698 per gram. Three spools in one qualifying order cost 3 × $21.99 = $65.97 before tax; twelve cost $263.88, or $323.76 if each ships alone with 12 × $4.99 added. Free shipping applies to two or more spools in the continental US. The maker’s 30-day satisfaction guarantee covers dissatisfaction, defects and damage on arrival, with exclusions for abuse, wear, alteration, unauthorized sellers and wrong-item purchases. Ordinary returns require sealed, unused goods within 30 days of purchase; the customer pays return shipping for wrong items or change of mind. An RMA needs the order name, order number and photos of the roll and defective prints. No longer warranty, replacement delivery time or partially consumed defective-spool remedy is documented. Third-party resale claims may need to go to the selling shop.
