Summary

A discontinued upright vacuum sealer with built-in roll storage and a cutter, sold by Hamilton Beach as the 78220 in its NutriFresh line. The catch: it is no longer available from the manufacturer, and the only instrumented test in the family covers a different model, so buy it only if you find it secondhand and can confirm which NutriFresh you are getting.

Strengths

  • Built-in roll storage and cutter, so bags are measured and cut on the unit.
  • Three seal modes cover delicate foods, moist foods and manual control.
  • Takes bag material up to 12 in wide.
  • Starter kit includes an 11 in × 20 ft roll, 4 gallon-size bags and 6 quart-size bags.
  • Hamilton Beach still sells NutriFresh bags, rolls and two VC02 service items for the platform.

Weaknesses

  • Discontinued, and Hamilton Beach no longer sells it.
  • The only scored test in the family is TechGearLab’s review of the 78213, a different model.
  • That test found the weakest handling of delicate, crushable foods and no removable drip tray.
  • Four NutriFresh models share the name, so listings and reviews get mixed up.
  • Weight and wattage are not published for the 78220.
  • No suction or heat-seal measurement exists for the exact 78220.

Which NutriFresh this is

The 78220 is the upright member of the NutriFresh line, with roll storage and a cutter built into the body (10.2 × 16.9 × 5.7 in). The name is shared with the 78213, 78214 and 78218, which use different controls, sizes and kits, so check the model number on the box before you buy. Hamilton Beach’s own page marks the 78220 “NO LONGER AVAILABLE”, and the listing for it carries ASIN B071KSJT9B.

Sealing modes and bags

The three modes do different jobs: low vacuum for soft or crushable items, a longer heat-seal for moist foods, and a pulse setting you trigger by hand. Bag material up to 12 in wide is stored on a built-in roll and cut to length with the on-board cutter. The starter kit is one 11 in × 20 ft roll, 4 gallon-size bags and 6 quart-size bags, which Hamilton Beach says is enough to seal over 20 gallons of food. The manufacturer also claims the sealer keeps food fresh up to 5x longer and can save up to $2,275 a year, the figure it credits to NRDC’s 2012 “Wasted” report; treat both as marketing claims, since no independent test covers the 78220.

Running costs and parts

The platform is still supported even though the sealer is not. Hamilton Beach lists two service items, a Maintenance Kit VC02 at $19.99 and a Roll Cutter VC02 at $13.99, plus NutriFresh bags and rolls from $7.99 to $39.99 (Hamilton Beach). For the sealer itself, Target listed the sibling 78214 at $100.99, down from $109.99 (Target), and CulinaryReviewer’s index carries a 78220 list price of $119.99.

The sibling test, and why it is not this model

Only one NutriFresh model has been put through instrumented testing: TechGearLab’s 78213, which measured 16.5 in. Hg of suction, was the weakest in its group at handling delicate and crushable foods, and had no removable drip tray. The 78213 is a different revision from the 78220, with a different body and no built-in roll storage of the same kind, so treat those results as a caution about the family rather than a measurement of this sealer.

Is it worth it?

The 78220 is a discontinued machine, so the value depends on what you pay for a used one. Find it cheap and confirm the model number, and you get roll storage, a cutter, three seal modes and a bag platform that is still stocked by the manufacturer. If you need published specs and a measurement you can trust, the missing weight and wattage figures and the absent exact-model test point elsewhere.
