Summary
A white countertop drip coffee maker with two separate brew paths: a reusable single-serve basket for a mug of up to 14 fl oz, or a 12-cup glass carafe. It suits a household that alternates between one commuter mug and a full pot, but check that you will use both sides, because each reservoir is filled by hand and only one side can brew at a time.
Strengths
- Genuine dual use: one appliance brews a single mug of ground coffee or a 60-fl oz pot for guests.
- The programmable start and regular/bold strength apply to either path, so morning brewing can be set up the night before.
- No K-Cup capsules and no pod subscription; the single-serve side uses loose grounds in a washable basket.
- The carafe path adds pause-and-pour and a two-hour warming plate, and the single-cup side turns itself off when done.
- Removable brewing parts are marked dishwasher safe, though the SANI cycle is not.
- Owners report units still working after several years of use with regular descaling.
Weaknesses
- Both reservoirs are filled by hand and the tanks cannot be removed for washing.
- Only one side brews at a time, so it cannot deliver two drinks at once.
- The fragile glass carafe is excluded from the warranty, and a fitting replacement is not confirmed for this model.
- Loose grounds mean a damp basket to empty after each brew, and the permanent single-serve mesh can let grounds through.
- Owners report spills and splatter, plus at least one unit that stopped working after around three months.
- Descaling is recommended monthly, or weekly in hard water, on each reservoir being used.

How the two brew paths work
The carafe side holds 60 fl oz (1.8 L) at the manual’s fill mark and takes about one level tablespoon of coffee per 5-oz marked cup; slide the lever right to brew it. The single-serve side is a separate path with its own hand-filled tank and takes no more than two level tablespoons of grounds, measured with the included scoop for a mug of up to 14 fl oz. Slide the lever left for it. The two sides cannot run together, so pressing both will not pour two drinks.
The carafe path adds AutoPause for a quick cup mid-brew, but the manual warns that leaving the carafe off its plate for more than 20 seconds during brewing can overflow onto the base. A 20–24 oz travel mug cannot be filled in one automatic single-serve cycle.
Cleaning, descaling and running costs
Empty and rinse the damp grounds basket after every use, and wash the carafe and removable parts in warm water; the manual marks them dishwasher safe but says to avoid the SANI cycle. The rear washable filter routine and the two view-window reservoirs keep the machine usable, though the tanks themselves are not removable.
Descale both reservoirs with plain white vinegar: for the single side use 1/2 cup vinegar plus 1/2 cup cold water, pause 30 seconds for 30 minutes, then rinse with two or three clean-water cycles; for the carafe reservoir use 2 cups vinegar the same way. The manual asks for at least monthly cleaning, or weekly where the water is hard, which is more work than a single-carafe machine.
Running costs are small. A pot a day for 365 days uses 365 basket papers, which works out to about $5.69 a year when 200 Melitta filters run $3.12 at Walmart; a single-serve-only household uses no carafe paper and can wash the scoop. No subscription and no pod system are required.
Spills, failures and repairs
The manual lists the likely causes of an overflowing basket: grounds that are too fine, an overfilled scoop, too much water in the single-serve tank, a badly seated paper filter, mineral buildup, or the carafe left off its plate for more than 20 seconds. On the exact model, one Best Buy buyer reported coffee spilled onto the counter several times within about a month, and another described splatter inside the grounds compartment. There is no published defect rate, so treat these as owner reports rather than a known failure rate.
One Best Buy buyer said the machine stopped working between roughly three months in, and separately that a new glass carafe cost them about $30. Glass is excluded from the warranty, and the maker’s 88152 replacement carafe is listed for other models, so a fitting 49933 carafe is not confirmed. Internal parts such as the heater, thermostat and pump are not sold for consumer repair; the manual points owners to Hamilton Beach service. Sourcing the exact reusable mesh basket matters too, because owners report the permanent single-serve filter can let grounds through.
Which model this is
This page covers the white Hamilton Beach 49933 2-Way programmable coffee maker. Do not confuse it with the 49980, 49980Z, 47650FG or the FlexBrew K-Cup machines. Some replacement parts and the 88152 carafe cross-reference those adjacent models, so confirm fit at the exact 49933 model and series level before buying. The white finish shows coffee stains more than the black version, which some owners prefer for hiding splashes.
Is it worth it?
If both brew sides will actually be used, a new 49933 from an authorized retailer at $50–65 is good value; $66–75 is fair, and $76–89 is full price. In October 2026 Home Depot showed the white model at $64.95, while the maker’s own store asked $88.99 and Best Buy and Lowe’s both showed $88.95. A Walmart exact-model listing at $66.14 was out of stock. Above $90, look for the Home Depot offer or a different machine rather than paying extra for the same brewer.
A household that only makes full pots can save money on the 46294J at $45.99, and a single-cup-only household may prefer the 47621 Scoop at $39.99. If the glass carafe and hot plate are the sticking point, the thermal-carafe 49929 FlexBrew Advanced is $149.99. None of these is the same two-way machine, so the choice turns on whether you need both paths in one appliance.
