Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A vertical countertop external-suction vacuum sealer from Gourmia’s 2016 generation, with Dry/Moist and Normal/Gentle settings, a standalone Seal button, a canister port for pickling, and an integrated roll bay with cutter. Buy one used only after watching a full cycle: the 0.8 bar vacuum is a rated ceiling, the manual asks for a 40-second pause between seals, and genuine GVS445 spare parts are hard to source.

Strengths

  • Upright body keeps counter depth free against a backsplash, the trait both reviews name first.
  • Built-in cutter and roll compartment make short freezer bags without scissors or a board.
  • Gentle, Moist and Seal controls suit bread, pastries and lightly damp food.
  • Removable liquid box in a pull-out drawer is easier to clean than fixed troughs.
  • Canister port and Pickling/Marinate cycle cover jars and short brine work.
  • Gourmia’s manual is still readable online, which helps when buying used.

Weaknesses

  • The manual asks for a 40-second pause between seals, and 20 seconds at minimum.
  • Both side latches must click at once; one latch alone can seal badly.
  • The internal roll bay holds roughly 10 ft, so bulk film must be cut down.
  • The case is about 8 in tall and needs overhead clearance for the roll lid.
  • No double seam, no vacuum readout, no replaceable commercial pump.
  • Genuine GVS445 gaskets, liquid boxes, blades and hoses were not findable, so a fault can end the machine’s life.

Which model this is

This page covers the Gourmia GVS445, a vertical countertop external-suction vacuum sealer from the brand’s 2016 generation. It is not the newer GVS1415 or the 10-in-1 machines that share the Gourmia name: those newer units are advertised at $99.99 to $119.99 and carry 10-in-1 buttons, a digital countdown or a claimed 1700W heating element that cannot be used to judge this 110W machine. If the badge on a used unit does not read GVS445, the dimensions, controls and parts differ, and the roll bay, canister port and pull-out cleaning drawer described below do not apply.

Vertical shape, bag width and what fits

The GVS445 measures 16.14 × 5.12 × 7.99 in (410 × 130 × 203 mm) and weighs a net 2.73 kg (about 6.0 lb). Stand it upright against a backsplash and it leaves more usable counter depth than a long horizontal sealer, which is the attraction both independent reviews name first. The trade is height: allow at least 8 in of clearance to open the roll compartment and reach the buttons. Official maximum sealing width is 30 cm of film, about 11.8 in across, and the manual asks for textured, vacuum-suitable material. Maximum sealing width is not the maximum roll that fits in the case. A separate editorial page gives roughly 5.25 × 16 × 7.75 in, broadly consistent with the manufacturer table once orientation is accounted for.

Controls, sealing and clean-up

Gourmia’s “8 functions” label groups eight marketing functions over seven described button functions: Vacuum Seal, Dry/Moist, Normal/Gentle, Seal-only, Pickling/Marinate, Canister and Stop, plus the built-in cutter and roll dispenser. An early press of the Seal button stops the vacuum and closes the bag, which is how you handle bread, pastries or lightly damp food without crushing it, and the Gentle setting reduces suction for the same reason. Both side latches must be pressed at the same time and two release buttons unlock the lid; sealing after a single latch click can pull too little air to hold. The manufacturer’s troubleshooting table blames poor sealing on a deformed lower gasket, a bag sitting in the wrong place, an obstructed suction hole, an overfilled bag, torn film or a dirty, wrinkled bag mouth. Clean-up is the pleasant part: a pull-out drawer carries a removable liquid box that the manual says to remove and clean after every use, though the assembly cannot be immersed or washed as one piece, and bags that held raw fish or meat, or that have been boiled or microwaved, must not be reused. Moist mode tolerates limited dampness only. Liquid reaching the bag lip reduces adhesion and can enter the suction channel, and the Pickling/Marinate button is meant for compatible sealed canisters rather than loose brine in a pouch.

Two independent reviews of this exact model are positive about the vertical shape and measured about the trade-offs. HouseAndBeyond highlights the canister use and the storage layout. CulinaryReviewer calls out the small roll bay and the ergonomics of the tall case, and its affiliate listing of 2026 shows an average figure around $144.76 that no verifiable retail transaction supports, so do not treat that as a checkout price. Gourmia’s own 2016 demonstration shows the eight-function marketing and a package that appears to include a starter roll and a vacuum hose, while HouseAndBeyond describes one small bag plus a roll and CulinaryReviewer mentions one 11in × 10ft starter roll; the original box contents are not reliably documented, so ask a seller for a photograph of everything included. Nobody has published a laboratory seal test, soak test or multi-year follow-up for this model, and the 0.8 bar figure is a manufacturer rating rather than an independent pressure or airflow benchmark. A first-hand GVS425 owner on a forum in 2023 described vacuum leaks and hunting for a foam gasket; that is a different Gourmia model and a warning about the brand’s parts ecosystem rather than a confirmed fault here. Recent Better Business Bureau disputes over proof of purchase, service fees and warranty refusals concern other Gourmia appliance lines, not this model, but they are a reason to check the seller’s receipt and return rights before you pay.

Film is the running cost. The manual calls for textured channel material up to 30 cm (11.8 in), and NESCO’s VS-04R two-roll kit of 11in × 19.7ft rolls was $23.99 direct in October 2026, giving 39.4 linear feet: one foot of film runs about $0.609, so 100 one-foot bags consume about $60.89 of plastic a year, three packs cost $71.97 up front, and roughly 18.2 feet carry over. A narrower NESCO VS-03R two-roll kit of 7.9in × 19.7ft rolls also exists, though its price was not confirmed, and FoodSaver’s October catalog listed an 11in × 12ft vacuum seal roll at $8.99. Test a small amount before buying, because a 19.7 ft roll may be longer than the internal bay accepts. Electricity barely registers: 100 sealing cycles drawing the full 110W for 40 seconds each work out to 0.122 kWh, about $0.024 a year at an assumed $0.20 per kWh, and the cooling pauses draw nothing. Spare parts are the weak point. The manual tells you to replace a deformed lower gasket, but no genuine GVS445 gasket part number, liquid box, cutter blade, hose or cord turned up, and generic kits from other brands are not confirmed to fit. On the used market, one eBay listing of this exact model showed $27.99 plus $23.79 shipping, $51.78 before tax with no returns, on a page indexed months before October 2026, so its availability is unconfirmed; a listing of a newer Gourmia 10-in-1 machine at $119.99 is a different product entirely. Set your own ceiling: up to about $35 delivered is worth a thorough test, $36 to $50 is a conditional buy if the upright shape matters to you, and above $50 a new Anova Precision Vacuum Sealer at $74 direct, with a two-year warranty and a 100-day money-back offer, is the better deal. Before you pay, ask for seller video of a full Vacuum Seal cycle and a seal-only cycle with a textured bag, check that a finished bag stays tight for several hours, test Gentle and both release latches, open the drawer for corrosion or food residue, and look at both gaskets and the cord.
