Summary
A 10-inch Google smart display launched in 2019, built around a 127-degree camera for video calls and a stereo speaker pair. Check the support calendar before you buy: security updates ended in September 2024 and Google Meet and Zoom support is gone.
Strengths
- The 127-degree camera with digital pan and zoom keeps the speaker in frame on video calls.
- The 10-inch screen and Ambient EQ make it a convincing digital photo frame.
- Stereo speakers built around a 30 W woofer fill a kitchen more easily than the smaller Nest Hub.
- The hardware switch cuts the microphone and camera when you want privacy.
- Thread border router and Matter support are built in for smart-home gear.
- Face Match and gesture control work on the device, with no subscription.
Weaknesses
- Security updates ended in September 2024, and Google no longer promises critical patches.
- The camera has no night vision and the hardware switch does not cover the lens.
- Google Meet and Zoom support ended in September 2023.
- Owners report firmware updates that brick the unit and white screens a reset cannot clear.
- The Gemini for Home upgrade removed some features and drew owner complaints.
- A Japan-model unit bought in the US may not carry a US warranty.

The camera and video calls
The camera is the reason this display exists. Face Match runs on the device and personalizes the screen for recognized people. The trade is what the camera lacks: no night vision, so it cannot work as a dark-room monitor, and no physical lens cover, so the hardware switch only cuts power to the sensor and microphone rather than hiding it.
No lab has published an instrumented test of the display or the audio, so treat the picture and sound quality as reviewed rather than measured.
Sound, screen and updates
The speakers are the other reason to pick the Max over the smaller Nest Hub. Two 18 mm tweeters and a 75 mm woofer fill a kitchen at half volume, though Consumer Reports found the bass boomy and the midrange hazy. The Verge found it weaker than Amazon’s Echo Show for music. The screen and Ambient EQ are consistently praised as an excellent photo frame.
The software side has aged harder. Google guaranteed security updates for five years, which ended September 9, 2024, and says critical patches will no longer be provided. Google still pushes firmware, and Gemini for Home is rolling out as a replacement assistant, though it needs Fuchsia firmware version 28 or higher. Google Meet and Zoom support ended in September 2023, and G Suite and Workspace calendar accounts are still not supported through the device.
Owner reports and reliability
Owners describe a cluster of problems rather than a single defect. One reports a unit bricked by a firmware update that hangs mid-reboot, with Google support declining to replace it. Others describe a permanent white screen that survives factory resets. A Google Assistant Community thread, with more than 340 users reporting the same issue, says live camera feeds stopped displaying after the Nest-to-Home app migration and had not been fixed by early 2026. The Gemini for Home upgrade drew complaints about inconsistent behavior and removed the British voice option. None of these reports carry a failure rate, so treat them as caution signals rather than a measured defect.
Is it worth it?
The Google Store US lists the Nest Hub Max at $229 and shows it out of stock. At that money it is a hard sell in 2026: it has no guaranteed security updates, its video-calling features are gone, and the owner complaints are unresolved. The smaller Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) sells for $99.99 and is the more supported choice for anyone who does not need a camera. Buy the Max only if you specifically want a 10-inch Google display with a camera and accept running it without guaranteed patches.
Which model this is
This page covers the Nest Hub Max, the large Google smart display launched in September 2019. The Japan-market variant is model GA01891, while the US model is GA00639; the core hardware is the same. It is the only Google smart display with a built-in camera, and it should not be confused with the smaller 7-inch Nest Hub.
The Amazon listing for the Japan-model display is ASIN B0FP69CPG6.
