Google Pixel Watch 4 45mm: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-10
Summary
The most common complaints are the Fitbit Premium paywall on advanced health features, inconsistent Gemini voice triggers, the third proprietary charger design in four years and scratches on the domed glass. Basic tracking costs nothing per year after purchase; the only recurring spend is the optional Fitbit Premium at $9.99 a month after the included six-month trial. It is a strong buy at $350–$375 on sale and fair value up to $400.
Common problems and fixes
- Fitbit Premium paywall — daily run recommendations, the AI health coach and advanced workout plans require a $9.99 a month subscription; PCMag and owners flag it as the main drawback, and a 6-month trial is included. Workaround: basic tracking and the included features work without Premium. [1][9]
- Gemini voice triggers misfire — raise-to-talk can fire accidentally and multi-step queries lag; The Verge and CNET describe the assistant as hit or miss. The Verge needed sensitivity tweaks to make Raise-to-Talk behave. [2][3]
- Domed glass scratches — CNET’s one-month follow-up reported visible scratches on the Gorilla Glass 5 during normal use. Consider a case or screen protector if that matters. [6]
- Split owner reports on GPS accuracy — one Reddit owner reported inaccuracies against a Coros Pace 3, while Android Central’s controlled test found GPS within 16 meters over 5 miles and elevation within 0.8 ft over 19 miles; the discrepancy is unresolved. [7][8]
- Health data split across two apps — data sits in both the Google Health and Fitbit apps, which owners find cumbersome. No fix; it is how the platform works. [9]
- Three-year update limit — software support is 3 years, fewer than Samsung’s 4 years and Google’s 7 years on Pixel phones; plan the replacement cycle accordingly. [12]
Parts and consumables
- Battery (user-replaceable) — the first Pixel Watch with a replaceable battery; parts are available through iFixit and Google-authorized repair, but the replacement cost under PixelCare or out of warranty is unpublished. [10][11]
- Display (user-replaceable) — iFixit warns a single display component can cost nearly a third of a new device, and the job needs an uncommon 1IP Torx Plus driver. [10]
- Quick Charge Dock — included in the box; separate-purchase availability and cost are unanswered as of October 2026. [4]
There are no scheduled consumables — no pods, filters or cartridges — and Google publishes full service manuals for both sizes.
Yearly running cost
$0 a year for basic tracking and the included features; no mandatory subscription exists. Fitbit Premium is optional at $9.99 a month after the included six-month trial, and basic sleep, heart-rate and workout tracking work without it. The only other possible yearly spend is an optional battery or display replacement, for which no price is published, or an optional PixelCare extended warranty. Electricity for daily charging is marginal and no kWh figure is published.
When it is a good buy
Google Store lists the 45mm Wi-Fi model at $399.99 (October 2025); at that price it competes with the Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 (44mm at $379.99) and the Apple Watch Series 11 (from $399).
- $350–$375 on sale: strong value — battery life and display are class-leading.
- $375–$400: fair value; compare the Galaxy Watch 8 for a broader feature set without the paywall.
- Above $400: weak value unless repairability and display are the top priorities.
Alternatives:
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 (44mm, $379.99) — more health sensors (body composition, antioxidant, vascular load) and AI coaching without a paywall. Better if the Premium paywall is a dealbreaker.
- Apple Watch Series 11 (from $399) — the direct rival; better inside the Apple ecosystem.
