Summary
A compact Ryzen 5 7640HS mini PC for office work, media playback and casual gaming, with user-upgradeable RAM and SSD and a USB4 port that can drive an external GPU. Check two things before you buy: the fan is clearly audible under load, and the bundled SSD is PCIe Gen 3 even though the slots support Gen 4.
Strengths
- Strong price-to-performance for the class; reviewers and owners consistently single it out.
- RAM and SSD are user-upgradeable through a removable top plate, with no soldered memory.
- USB4 at 40 Gbps enables an external GPU, which is rare at this price.
- Dual 2.5 GbE Ethernet makes it a good fit for home-lab and networking use.
- Compact footprint and a bundled VESA mount let you hide it behind a monitor.
- Lon.TV confirmed Ubuntu runs with all hardware detected.
Weaknesses
- The fan is clearly audible under load; reviewers and owners alike complain about it.
- Idle power draw is about 10 W, on the higher side for the class.
- The bundled SSD is PCIe Gen 3, so storage stays limited until you fit a Gen 4 drive.
- DDR5-4800 is slow and shows up as a bottleneck in benchmarks.
- BIOS options are limited, and the plastic chassis trails aluminum rivals.
- The 10 TOPS NPU is only useful for light AI workloads.

Performance
The 7640HS is the point of this machine, and it holds up. TechPowerUp recorded Cinebench 2024 scores of 146 multi and 51 single, Geekbench 6 of 2,191 single and 9,871 multi, and PCMark 10 of 6,518. Notebookcheck rated it 77% and measured CPU performance in the same class as an Intel Core i9-12900HK in the BMAX B9 Power; TechRadar gave it four out of five overall and full marks for value.
Gaming works for esports and older titles. TechPowerUp saw Dota 2 above 70 FPS at 1080p, CS2 in the 80–90 FPS range, and Cyberpunk 2077 in the mid-50s at 720p Medium. The Radeon 760M is noticeably weaker than newer Radeon 780M/890M or Intel Arc integrated graphics, so treat heavy 1080p gaming as out of reach.
Noise and cooling
Noise is the one finding every source shares. Notebookcheck called the fan “clearly audible under load” with still “immature” fan control; TechPowerUp heard a “slight high-pitched hum” in a quiet room; TechRadar said it “elevated considerably” under load. Owners on r/MiniPCs raise loud fan noise as a recurring concern. The system is silent at idle, and the dual-fan design keeps performance steady under sustained load — it just does so audibly.
Upgrades, storage and ports
The top cover lifts off for RAM and SSD access, and a second internal plate holds the fan. Two M.2 2280 slots and two SO-DIMM slots mean you can start small and grow, and the USB4 port adds an external GPU path later. The catch is the bundled drive: it is PCIe Gen 3, so you need your own Gen 4 SSD to use the slots’ full bandwidth. There is only one USB-C port, which is a minor annoyance once you want display, power and data at the same time.
Running costs and value
Electricity is the main running cost: about 10 W at idle, which TechPowerUp estimated at $13–$18 a year. There is no subscription. GMKtec’s own page listed the barebone at $259.99 and the 32 GB / 1 TB model at $389.99 in October 2025; Newegg lists the 32 GB / 512 GB at $569.99 and the 32 GB / 1 TB at $629.99. At the August 2025 China launch the barebone was 1499 yuan (about $210), the 16 GB / 512 GB 1999 yuan (about $280) and the 32 GB / 1 TB 2499 yuan (about $350). At $300–$400 it is a strong buy; TechPowerUp still recommended it at $510, but above that the value fades as newer platforms appear.
Which model this is
This page covers the GMKtec NucBox M6 Ultra built on the AMD Ryzen 5 7640HS. The US listing for the 32 GB RAM / 1 TB SSD model carries ASIN B0FLJQW1RD. Do not confuse it with the GMKtec M6, which uses the Ryzen 5 6600H and Radeon 660M, or the M5 Ultra, which uses the Ryzen 7 7730U.
