GMKtec NucBox G3: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-11-04
Summary
The G3 runs quietly on about 6-8 W in light use, but owners report it stalling on long or intensive tasks, trouble getting Linux sound and Wi-Fi working, and memory that was not recognised at its full size. Running costs are limited to electricity because there are no consumables. It is a good buy for light office or media use below the $199 the 16 GB + 512 GB model cost in 2024, and the barebone version is worth it near the $119 quoted in 2024 if you already have a RAM module and an NVMe drive.
Common problems and fixes
- Limited CPU for intensive work — Geekbench on Windows 11 gave 871 single-core and 2,428 multi-core, and the CPU sat at 100% at about 3.3 GHz under full load; the fix is to keep it to light office work, streaming and light server duty. [1]
- Linux sound and Wi-Fi not working out of the box — in one Linux Mint test the sound and Wi-Fi failed and HDMI audio needed a startup command; the workaround was to install the needed drivers and run that command at startup. [3]
- Wi-Fi slower than wired — a Wi-Fi 5 test gave about 61 Mbps down and 92 Mbps up against 854 Mbps down on the wired link; the radio is rated Wi-Fi 6 but that test ran on Wi-Fi 5, so use Ethernet for large transfers. [1]
- Barebone unit needs parts installed — the barebone variant ships with no RAM, SSD or OS, and a Windows install means downloading an OS image rather than cloning a drive, with drivers from GMKtec. [3]
Parts and consumables
- M.2 2280 PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD — barebone units need one; tested drives were 256 GB and 1 TB, and the slot takes drives up to 2 TB. [3]
Yearly running cost
Power draw is about 6-8 W in light use and up to about 15 W under heavy load, and there are no filters, pods or subscriptions. The electricity bill is therefore the only running cost, and its yearly size depends on the local tariff and on how many hours a day the unit is powered; the sources give no per-kWh price, so no yearly euro or dollar figure can be stated.
