Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

The X210 is a compact 1440p dash cam with a built-in polarizer, GPS, voice control and a 2.4-inch screen, aimed at drivers who want Garmin’s app and compact form. Check what you want from it before buying: Parking Guard and Live View need a paid Vault subscription and constant power, and no memory card comes in the box.

Strengths

  • 1440p HDR recording at 30 fps, with 1080p at 60 fps when you want smoother motion.
  • Built-in Clarity Polarizer is meant to cut windshield glare.
  • Digital Camera World found the video quality good and installation simple.
  • The app is nicely designed and easy to use, in the same review.
  • GPS, Galileo, voice control and a 2.4-inch screen in a 62 g body.
  • Magnetic quick-detach mount is listed among the available mounting options.

Weaknesses

  • Parking Guard and Live View require a paid Vault subscription, an active Wi-Fi connection and constant power.
  • The internal battery lasts only about 20 minutes, so parking use needs vehicle power.
  • No microSD card in the US box; a Class 10 card of at least 8 GB is needed.
  • Night footage leaves plates and street signs unreadable except for the car directly ahead, according to Digital Camera World.
  • Some vehicles need a separate Constant Power Cable, and older Garmin parking cables do not fit because the X210 uses USB Type-C.
  • A single buyer reported the camera dropping its app connection, and another lost a clip when a smaller card filled up.

Video and lens

The X210 records at up to 2560 × 1440 with HDR at 30 fps, and can switch to 1080p at 60 fps or 1080p at 30 fps with HDR. The 140-degree diagonal lens covers a wide field of the road, and the built-in polarizer is there to fight windshield glare. Digital Camera World rated the video quality as good and said the camera performs well, but no independent test of the polarizer’s effect was found.

Night footage is the weak spot. Digital Camera World found plates and street signs mostly unreadable beyond the vehicle directly ahead. That limits what the recording can settle after an incident at night.

Parking Guard and power

Parking Guard and Live View are where the ownership cost sits. Both need a paid Vault subscription, an active Wi-Fi connection and constant power, and some vehicles need a separate Constant Power Cable. The built-in battery is good for about 20 minutes, so the camera is not a standalone parking recorder.

The X210 takes USB Type-C power, so parking-mode cables made for earlier Garmin models do not carry over. A retailer lists the parking-mode hardwire cable at $34.99 and an OBD-II adapter at $44.99 (Dashcam Store). Vault subscription pricing was not found in the sources checked.

Storage and upkeep

A microSD card is not included in the US box. Supported capacity runs from 8 GB up to 512 GB, and the card must be Class 10 or faster. The owner’s manual says to format the card in exFAT and to reformat it at least every six months.

Two single-buyer reports point at the same practical trap: one buyer lost a clip because it was overwritten on a smaller card before it could be retrieved, and one buyer reported the camera not staying connected to the app, possibly a Bluetooth or setup issue. Both are anecdotes from retailer listings, not patterns.

Is it worth it?

The price is the awkward part. Dashcam Store lists the camera at $319.99 with $299.99 sale pricing, and Digital Camera World quotes $299.99 retail. A forum thread title in the sources shows the camera seen at $249, though the thread itself was not read. A forum member also noted in 2025 that the X210 runs about $100 more than the older DC57 and $100 less than the X310.

For a car that only needs 1440p driving footage, that money is high next to the features you get without paying for a subscription. If you want Garmin’s compact body, its app and the ecosystem around it, a price near $250 suits the camera better than $300.

Warranty is one year from the manufacturer, with an optional extra year listed at $12.50 (Dashcam Store).

Which model this is

This page covers the Garmin Dash Cam X210, black, US part number 010-02859-00. The 010-02859-10 number on European, Australian and New Zealand listings is a regional variant of the same camera. The X110 and the 4K touchscreen X310 are different models, and the older Mini, Mini 2, 67W and 47 lines are not covered here. The X310 is the 4K model; 1440p is the ceiling on the X210.
