Summary
A mid-range GPS running smartwatch with a bright AMOLED touchscreen, multi-band GNSS and up to 13 days of battery, built for runners and multi-sport athletes. Check one thing before buying: the optical heart-rate sensor tracks well at steady pace but is unreliable during intervals and strength work, so budget for a chest strap if accuracy in those sessions matters.
Strengths
- Bright AMOLED display that reviewers call easy to read in sunlight.
- Accurate multi-band GPS and elevation tracking.
- Up to 13 days in smartwatch mode and 20 hours with GPS.
- Light at 47 g and comfortable for daily wear.
- Training Readiness and other advanced training metrics.
- Music storage for phone-free runs, with buttons and a touchscreen together.
Weaknesses
- The Elevate v4 optical sensor is unreliable during intervals and strength work; owners recommend a chest strap.
- Firmware 27.09 (January 2026) caused reported heart-rate, step, sleep and battery issues for some users.
- The AMOLED screen cuts battery life versus the MIP-based Forerunner 255 (13 vs 14 days smartwatch; 20 vs 30 hours GPS).
- No full-color topographic maps; navigation is breadcrumb and course-following only.
- No speaker, microphone or voice assistant, and limited smartwatch apps.
- The Gorilla Glass 3 lens shows reflections and smudges more than the coating on the 965.

Display and battery
The 1.3-inch AMOLED screen is the standout change for the Forerunner line, and reviewers consistently praise its brightness and readability in sunlight. It is a clear step up from the MIP display on the Forerunner 255, and it costs battery life: Garmin rates the 265 at up to 13 days in smartwatch mode and 20 hours with GPS, against 14 days and 30 hours for the 255. Consumer Reports measured 362 hours, about 15 days, in typical daily use, slightly better than Garmin’s figure.
Heart rate and the 27.09 firmware
The Elevate v4 optical sensor is the watch’s weak point. Reviewers and owners say it holds up for steady-state cardio but suffers cadence lock during running and lags through rapid changes in intervals and strength training; Garmin’s own support page acknowledges cadence lock, and owners recommend a chest strap for those sessions. Firmware 27.09, released in January 2026, brought reports of unreliable heart-rate tracking, frozen step counts, missing sleep detection and faster battery drain. Some users saw no problems at all, and Garmin moderators acknowledged the reports but had not published a fix timeline as of late January 2026.
Maps, controls and smart features
The 265 has breadcrumb trail navigation and course following, but not the full-color topographic maps reserved for the 965 and 970. There is no speaker or microphone, so no calls and no voice assistant, and the app ecosystem is thinner than the Venu 3 or an Apple Watch. On the wrist, reviewers prefer the physical buttons over the touchscreen when wet or sweaty, and the watch mixes both. Music storage is 8 GB with offline Spotify, Deezer and Amazon Music.
Is it worth it?
Garmin lists the Forerunner 265 at a $449.99 MSRP, and the watch launched at $449 in March 2023. It is strongest for runners and multi-sport athletes who want a bright AMOLED screen, reliable multi-band GPS and advanced training metrics without flagship pricing; at $350–400 it is excellent value against the $449.99 list. At $450 and up, weigh the 965 and 970, which add full maps, longer battery and more features for roughly $150–250 more. It is a weaker fit as a daily smartwatch replacement, because of the limited apps, no voice assistant and no calling. There are no mandatory running costs; only music streaming needs a subscription, and the core fitness features work without one.
Which model this is
This page covers the Forerunner 265 in the 46mm case, Black/Powder Gray, with the AMOLED display. The Forerunner 265 also comes as the 42mm 265S; the two share features but differ in case size, display size and battery life, and the 265S has a 1.1-inch 360 × 360 screen. Garmin’s published part numbers are 010-02810-01 and 010-02810-00, while the product ID 010-02768-01 does not match them and may be a vendor-specific SKU, so verify the part number on the watch or its packaging.
