Garmin Forerunner 265: problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-18

Summary

The Forerunner 265’s main complaint is the Elevate v4 optical heart-rate sensor, which tracks steady runs but suffers cadence lock and lag during intervals and strength work, so a chest strap is the usual fix. A January 2026 firmware update (27.09) also brought reports of heart-rate, step, sleep and battery faults for some users. There is no mandatory running cost, and at $350–400 it is excellent value against the $449.99 list.

Yearly running cost

No mandatory running cost: Garmin Coach, Training Readiness and the core training metrics work without a subscription. Offline music playback needs a streaming service subscription, and storage is 8 GB, but that is optional. [2][3][7]

When it is a good buy

Garmin lists the watch at a $449.99 MSRP and it launched at $449 in March 2023; Consumer Reports listed it from $373.51 in July 2023 and a May 21, 2025 deal put it at $349.99. At $350–400 it is excellent value against the $449.99 list; at $450 and up, weigh the Forerunner 965 at $599, which adds full maps and longer battery, or the Forerunner 255 at $349–$399 if a MIP screen and more battery matter more than AMOLED.
