Summary
A 2-in-1 countertop vacuum sealer that heat-seals bags and rolls and includes a retractable handheld sealer for zipper bags, containers and canisters. Check one thing before buying: the machine is built around FoodSaver’s own bags and rolls, and no independent lab has published a test of this exact model.
Strengths
- Two machines in one: a heat-seal channel plus a retractable handheld sealer for zipper bags and containers.
- Automatic bag detection and moisture sensing take the guesswork out of sealing.
- Built-in roll storage and a cutter let you make custom-size bags.
- The 5-year limited warranty is longer than many rivals offer.
- Sealing holds up for freezer storage, and owners call the 2-in-1 design versatile.
- The drip tray lifts out and goes in the dishwasher.
Weaknesses
- It is a suction sealer, not a chamber sealer, so it cannot safely seal liquids directly in the bag.
- The handheld sealer needs FoodSaver hoses and adapters, and the containers are sold separately.
- FoodSaver’s own bags and rolls cost more than generic vacuum-sealer bags.
- Owners report occasional seal failures and a learning curve for placing bags correctly.
- No independent instrumented test of this exact model has been published.

How it seals
The V4400 is a channel sealer: you lay the bag opening in the vacuum channel, the pump draws the air out and a heat bar seals the seam. Automatic bag detection finds the bag edge for you, and moisture sensing switches the machine’s mode when it detects liquid, which helps with foods that carry some moisture. It still cannot pull a hard vacuum on liquid, so for soups and wet marinades you freeze first or step up to a chamber sealer. The retractable handheld sealer snaps out for zipper bags, containers and canisters, but those connect through FoodSaver’s own hose and adapters, and the containers are sold separately.
Bags, rolls and running costs
The machine takes 8" and 11" rolls, pre-cut bags and zipper bags, and the built-in cutter lets you size each bag to the job. The real ownership cost is consumables: FoodSaver’s own bags and rolls run more than generic vacuum-sealer bags, and the manual asks you to use only FoodSaver bags and accessories. Empty the drip tray after every use and keep the vacuum channel clean. The starter kit includes an 11" × 10’ roll, three 1-quart and two 1-gallon vacuum bags, and three 1-quart and two 1-gallon zipper bags.
Repairs, parts and support
The 5-year limited warranty is longer than many competitors’. A specialist review site found that every unit-quitting case it saw fell well inside that window, so an early failure should be a warranty claim rather than a write-off. Replacement parts are available through FoodSaver’s service channel, though you have to contact the company for part numbers and prices. One owner repaired a FoodSaver that would not seal automatically by resoldering a pressure switch on the circuit board, so there is some repairability for anyone comfortable with electronics.
Is it worth it?
At or below $150 the V4400 is reasonable value if you want the 2-in-1 versatility and the FoodSaver ecosystem. Above $200 the case weakens: there is no independent instrumented test of this exact model, and the proprietary bags and rolls keep costing money. FoodSaver lists the V4400 at $234.99, so the question is whether you will use the handheld sealer and the FoodSaver bag range enough to justify the ecosystem.
Which model this is
This page covers the FoodSaver V4400, the silver-and-black 2-in-1 model, ASIN B00DI342B4. The near-identical V4440 is the black-finish variant in the same series and carries manufacturer model number 2159285; do not confuse either with the V4800, V4840, FM2000 or FM5200. The biggest difference between the V4400 and the similar 4840 is automatic bag detection, which drew complaints on the 4840 but not on the V4400. The V4400 is a suction sealer, not a chamber sealer.
