Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A five-roll multipack of cut-to-length vacuum-sealer bag material, model 2159288: two 8-inch rolls and three 11-inch rolls, 88 linear feet in total. Check that your sealer accepts both roll widths, and that you want the mixed pack rather than the shorter 14.5-foot Freezer Variety set.

Strengths

  • Two widths avoid spending 11-inch plastic on small portions.
  • FoodSaver tunes its heat-seal strip temperature to its own film.
  • Airtight packaging cuts freezer burn compared with air-permeable supermarket wrap.
  • Walmart’s exact listing undercuts FoodSaver direct, $29.99 against $49.99 (October 2026).
  • Dated owner comments describe steady use for game, meat, fish and bulk shopping.
  • Nothing is mandatory beyond a working sealer and a pair of scissors.

Weaknesses

  • Some boxes arrive with creased or wrinkled film that will not seal; owners reported it in 2024 and 2025.
  • Bags can lose vacuum after sealing when folds, grease or moisture cross the seam.
  • Reused material and older machines sometimes fail to seal film that works when new.
  • The 8-inch rolls are too narrow for wide cuts, and 11-inch rolls waste width on small portions.
  • There is no zipper opening, so every time you reopen a bag you shorten it.
  • No published seal-failure rate or batch data, so creasing is a known annoyance rather than a measurable defect.

Sealing problems owners report

FoodSaver’s own model page hosts the clearest reports. Bran (May 6, 2024) described a whole box of the five-roll multipack with wrinkles that would not seal on a GameSaver Titanium, and MyAzMaria (November 7, 2025) said recent orders arrived with deep creases that had to be cut away. FoodSaver’s troubleshooting FAQ confirms the mechanism: a wrinkle crossing the seal admits air. The fix is to cut the bad section off, flatten and clean the opening, and reseal; film that is itself perforated goes in the bin.

Lost vacuum after sealing is the other complaint. The cause is not established: folds, grease or moisture at the seam, a puncture, or a misaligned bar can all do it. R/sousvide threads describe the same pattern, including a leak during a long cook, and one owner who trims an extra half-inch and reseals successfully. Nobody has published a failure rate, so treat this as a known annoyance rather than a defect.

Reuse is worth calling out. In a January 2025 r/sousvide thread an owner’s FoodSaver sealer would seal new bags but stall on previously used material, while others reported it working after a trim. That is not evidence of a deliberate restriction or a flaw in every pack.

Running costs and what to buy

The roll material is the consumable. There is no filter, battery or cartridge, and the gaskets, heating strips and cutter blades belong to whichever sealer you own, not to the pack.

Walmart’s exact five-roll listing (item 10992842) is $29.99, and FoodSaver direct is $49.99 (observed October 2026). That is about $0.34 a linear foot against $0.57 for the same 88 feet. A rough yearly figure helps: 100 twelve-inch bags is 1.136 packs, so about $34.08 a year at $29.99 or about $56.81 at $49.99, before tax and delivery. Real cuts waste material, and a 12-inch section does not leave a generous sealing margin.

Buy at $25 or less and a sealed, undamaged box is strong value. Between $25 and $35 it is fair if you will use both widths. Over $40, compare the alternatives: Avid Armor’s 11" × 50’ two-pack is $19.99 for 100 feet at one width, and its 8" × 25’ four-pack is $17.99 for 100 feet at 8 inches. FoodSaver’s own 8" × 20’ three-pack (model 2159392) is $32.99 for 60 feet, and its 11" × 16’ three-pack is $44.99 for 48 feet. For bone-in meat or game in FoodSaver film, the Heavy Duty 11" × 16’ six-pack is $82.49 for 96 feet, a heavier gauge than the standard rolls.

Cutting, sealing and food safety

Every new section needs a first-end seal before you fill it and a second vacuum-and-seal after. FoodSaver’s instructions want at least 3 inches of empty material between the food and the open end, and some manuals ask for 4 inches. Leave too little and you waste more plastic than a longer cut would have.

Cuts, curl and crinkles from tight rolls make flat seals harder; on stubborn end-of-roll film FoodSaver suggests a straight recut that removes about half an inch. Wet meat, marinades and soft foods push liquid into the channel and the seal zone, so pre-freeze wet items or use a machine’s moist setting and keep the edge dry. Vacuum packing does not make food shelf-stable: the University of Maine warns about reduced-oxygen safety, including removing frozen fish from the bag before thawing.

Reuse is limited. FoodSaver allows washing and reusing bags that held fruit, vegetables, bread or dry goods but says discard them after raw meat, fish, eggs, unpasteurized cheese or greasy food. Its product page mentions dishwasher cleaning while its support answers recommend hand-washing, so follow the stricter advice. There is no zip opening, so a bag you open often will not last.

Which model this is

This page covers the standard five-roll multipack, FoodSaver model 2159288: 2 × 8" × 20’ plus 3 × 11" × 16’. Walmart lists it as item 10992842. Do not confuse it with the Freezer Variety five-pack, which uses shorter 14.5-foot rolls, or with FoodSaver’s Heavy Duty and Avid Armor film, which are different materials.
