Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

An open-frame CoreXY desktop 3D printer with a 220 x 220 x 220 mm build volume and a direct-drive extruder. Check which materials you plan to print: ABS and ASA are absent from the official material table, and the open frame has no air filtration.

Strengths

  • A 220 x 220 x 220 mm build volume on a rigid all-metal CoreXY frame.
  • A direct-drive extruder with tool-free nozzle changes.
  • Headline motion of 600 mm/s and 20,000 mm/s2 acceleration.
  • One-click automatic leveling and input-shaper vibration compensation.
  • A flexible removable PEI steel build plate.
  • Wi-Fi, Ethernet and USB, with FlashPrint 5 and OrcaSlicer support.

Weaknesses

  • The open frame has no air filtration and needs a separate enclosure for some materials.
  • ABS and ASA are absent from the official material table.
  • The bed maximum temperature is reported as either 100 C or 110 C across official pages.
  • Printing precision is listed as either 0.1 mm or 0.2 mm depending on the manual version.
  • TPU and carbon-fibre filaments need the larger optional nozzles.
  • Reviews often mix its specifications with the enclosed 5M Pro.

Materials and the open frame

The Adventurer 5M is an open-frame machine, and that shapes what it can print. The official material table lists PLA and PETG on the installed 0.4 mm nozzle, and recommends TPU, PLA-CF and PETG-CF on the 0.6 mm or 0.8 mm nozzles. ABS and ASA are not in that table, and the open frame ships with no air filtration, so printing fume-heavy materials calls for the separately sold enclosure kit. The build plate is a flexible removable PEI steel sheet, and the CoreXY frame is described as an all-metal stable structure.

Leveling, speed and calibration

Setup is built around one-click automatic leveling that senses nozzle pressure against the bed, so there is no manual paper-and-feeler routine. The head is a single direct-drive extruder with tool-free quick-release nozzles, which makes a nozzle swap a short job rather than a teardown. Motion figures are a 600 mm/s maximum travel speed and 20,000 mm/s2 maximum acceleration, with a 10-300 mm/s printing range, and the machine includes an extruder vibration suppression algorithm plus an input-shaper-style vibration test in its calibration routine. A 4.3-inch touchscreen handles on-machine control, and the printer connects over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or USB.

Specification conflicts

A few official numbers do not agree, so treat them as unsettled. The maximum platform temperature is listed as 100 C on the EU product page but 110 C in the wiki introduction to the AD5M series. Printing precision is listed as plus or minus 0.1 mm on 100 mm cubes in the 2024 English user manual, but as plus or minus 0.2 mm on a 100 mm block in the Japanese official page and an earlier manual transcription. Slicer support also varies: official pages list FlashPrint 5, Orca-Flashforge and OrcaSlicer, while one reseller adds PrusaSlicer and Cura, which the manufacturer does not list. The dimensional accuracy claim in particular should not be relied on without an independent test.

Which model this is

This page covers the open-frame FlashForge Adventurer 5M, model code AD5M, sold under ASIN B0CHJGFVSL. Do not merge it with the Adventurer 5M Pro, which is the enclosed variant with different acoustics and filtration, or with the AD5X multi-colour machine. The open-frame 5M and the 5M Pro share the 220 x 220 x 220 mm build volume and the 600 mm/s and 20,000 mm/s2 headline figures, which is a common source of mix-ups in reviews.
