Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A lightweight 2022-generation Fitbit/Google fitness smartwatch with a claimed 6+ day battery, AMOLED screen, built-in GPS and sleep tracking, now tied to the Google Health app.

Strengths

  • Compact, light case and AMOLED panel suit continuous daytime and overnight wear better than bulkier sports watches for many users.
  • Steps, activity, heart rate, sleep tracking and basic watch operation work without Google Health Premium; Best Buy retailer Q&A includes a Fitbit representative confirming a subscription is not necessary.
  • Sleep and overnight wellness tracking are stronger than demanding training tracking in some independent evaluations.
  • Google Maps, Wallet, Bluetooth calls and later YouTube Music phone controls make it more functional in 2026 than the limited launch software.
  • Official accessories: Google sells 24mm Attach bands compatible with Versa 4/Sense 2/Sense/Versa 3, plus a charger covering those generations but not Versa 2.

Weaknesses

  • GPS problems independently reproduced: Android Authority reported slow or missing satellite lock (more than ten minutes before a lock in one outdoor test, then a dropout), inaccurate route tracks and distance; TechRadar and Live Science also saw delay or route imprecision; Wareable had multiple runs without a usable lock.
  • Optical heart-rate error in vigorous exercise: Android Authority documented dropouts and missed peaks versus a chest strap/Apple Watch; Wareable saw maximum heart-rate values sometimes nearly 10 bpm high versus a MyZone strap.
  • Battery collapse and boot loops reported with aging or updates: owner reports from 2025 and 2026 describe units that formerly lasted 5–9 days developing spontaneous boot loops, shutdowns, very slow charging, roughly five-hour battery life and unresponsive watches, including an August 31, 2026 BBB complaint about a 19-month-old unit that stopped syncing and became unchargeable.
  • Sparse apps: no unrestricted third-party watch-app gallery, Google Assistant, ECG/EDA or independent offline music playback; phone-linked YouTube Music controls require an eligible subscription and a nearby phone.
  • Built-in maps are phone-assisted, not independent turn-by-turn route planning.

Battery life and GPS

Google’s 6+ day figure is an estimate at unspecified mixed use, and Google warns that GPS, SpO2 and always-on display reduce it. The practical reading is that battery life is workload- and settings-dependent, and the watch is more likely to land nearer three days than six for an always-on user.

GPS is the weaker part of the training experience. Android Authority reported more than ten minutes to a first lock in one outdoor test, followed by a dropout, plus inaccurate route tracks and distance; TechRadar and Live Science also observed delay or route imprecision; Wareable had multiple runs without a usable lock. Google’s later firmware says GPS handoff has improved, but no matched post-update independent re-test was located, so treat the improvement as claimed rather than measured.

Heart rate and workouts

Android Authority compared workouts against a chest strap/Apple Watch and documented heart-rate dropouts and missed peaks; Wareable saw maximum heart-rate values sometimes nearly 10 bpm high versus a MyZone strap. If precise intervals and heart-rate zones matter, the Versa 4 is a weak pick, and a chest strap or other validated equipment is the better source. The watch still records steps, activity and sleep without a subscription, so it suits a wellness-first buyer more than a training-first one.

Reliability and support

Owner reports from 2025 and 2026 describe Versa 4 units that formerly lasted 5–9 days per charge developing spontaneous boot loops, shutdowns, very slow charging and roughly five-hour battery life, plus units that became unresponsive after charging. A Google Health Community user tied similar symptoms to the May 2026 app transition, and a Google specialist documented troubleshooting for continuously rebooting units. These are first-person accounts, not diagnosed causes; no population failure rate, mean time to failure or root cause has been published.

Google’s own troubleshooting steps include cleaning watch and charger contacts, checking spring-loaded cable pins, using a standard wall charger for one hour, disabling always-on display for battery drain, and pressing the side button for 10 seconds until the logo appears. The red-X sync flow involves removing and re-pairing the device. Restarting does not normally erase health data; a factory reset is separate and can erase unsynced data. Do not pry open a swollen or hot battery or bypass the charger.

Google Store USA lists the Versa 4 at $199.95 (checked October 23, 2026). Some indexed Google Store pages still show $159.95 with a temporary September 13–27, 2026 promotion; that offer is expired as of this report date. US retailer samples in October 2026 include Walmart black/graphite around $199.00, Best Buy copper rose around $199.95 and Sam’s Club black/graphite bundle at $189.00 (membership and eligibility may apply). Verify checkout, seller and returns.

Editorial value thresholds: $120 or less new from a dependable seller with full US warranty is a good buy; $120–$150 is potentially sensible only with a return policy and clear serial/model identity; $160–$200 only if the Versa 4’s particular hardware and software balance is essential; above $200 is poor relative value for a 2022 platform without a full app ecosystem. At those levels, compare Fitbit Charge 6 at $159.95, Amazfit Bip 6 at $79.99, or Garmin vívoactive 6 at its $299.99 April 2025 launch MSRP. Historical median prices or lowest exact-SKU prices outside the manufacturer’s site were not found.

Basic operation needs no subscription: steps, activity, heart rate, sleep and many workout statistics record with $0 mandatory subscription fees per year beyond a compatible phone and internet. Google Health Premium is $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year as of the May 2026 relaunch, with twelve monthly bills totaling $119.88 versus $99.99 on the annual tier. A new eligible purchase may include a three-month introductory trial; verify eligibility and cancellation before activating. Premium adds coaching and deeper views rather than being required to use the watch.

Parts and running costs

  • Infinity band for Fitbit 24mm Attach: $29.95 at the checked manufacturer price (October 2026), compatible with Versa 4, Sense 2, Versa 3 and Sense; small and large sizes sold individually. Other official band types have no verified stable US price per size or color.
  • Internal lithium-polymer battery, AMOLED assembly, buttons and sensor board: no public original replacement part numbers, retail component prices, DIY replacement schedule or authorized component-level service quote was found. A warranty claim can lead to whole-device replacement; do not assume cheap DIY battery replacement is officially supported.
  • No filters, cartridges or proprietary refill materials are required.
  • No reliable annual electricity cost was calculated; Google confirms a rechargeable cell and about two hours to charge but not capacity, efficiency or wall-meter readings.

Support and warranty

Google’s US consumer limited warranty is one year for Fitbit-branded hardware purchased on or after July 11, 2023, with country-, seller- and condition-dependent terms; accidental damage is not covered. Claims require serial number, buyer and contact details, sometimes proof of purchase, and diagnostics; if a qualifying defect is confirmed during coverage, Google can provide a replacement after inspecting the returned watch. An out-of-warranty contact channel exists but is not a guaranteed low-price battery repair program.

An August 31, 2026 BBB complaint describes a Versa 4 that started restarting repeatedly at about 19 months old, stopped syncing and became unchargeable, with free replacement refused as out of warranty. Google public support forums document troubleshooting for reboot loops; no independently audited average claim handling time, replacement approval rate or battery failure rate was found.

Security updates are guaranteed until at least February 2028, extendable if the watch stays on sale; security updates and warranty are separate obligations. Return windows at Google Store, Walmart and Best Buy vary and opened-wearable eligibility must be checked per order.

Which model this is

This page covers the 2022-generation Fitbit Versa 4, Google/Fitbit FB523 family, sold in colors including black/graphite (FB523BKBK-US) and copper rose (FB523RGRW-US at Best Buy). It is not a Versa 3 or Sense 2, and it is not a Wear OS watch: there is no full third-party app ecosystem, no ECG or EDA sensor, and no standalone offline music storage. Firmware 210.26 added phone-dependent YouTube Music controls and firmware 220.31 documented bug fixes; those controls require a compatible phone nearby and an eligible YouTube subscription. The watch requires a Google account and the Google Health app, and the former Fitbit app was rebranded Google Health in May 2026. Health readings are informational and not medical diagnoses.
