Summary
A 1 kg spool of FilaCube’s modified PLA 2 in black, 1.75 mm, made in Houston, Texas and sold direct at $23.97 (FilaCube, October 23, 2026). Check your printer’s bed preset before the first print: the maker’s Black-page recommendation runs cooler than most generic PLA profiles.
Strengths
- Owners describe smooth, clean prints once temperature is tuned, including at 220°C.
- Maker documents cosplay shields sanded, primed and painted after printing.
- Black PLA 2 is sold in 1, 2, 3 and 5 kg spools for consistent color runs.
- Published nozzle, bed, cooling and retraction starting points, plus Black-specific troubleshooting.
- USA manufacture with a published support email and brand shop.
- Some owners name FilaCube a favorite in filament comparisons.
Weaknesses
- Bed-temperature advice conflicts: below 40°C, below 50°C, or 50–70°C depending on source.
- Drying advice conflicts: 50°C versus 60–80°C for 1–2 hours.
- Black pigment can need a hotter nozzle than other colors (215 to 220°C).
- No verified technical data sheet or mechanical/thermal test numbers for this spool.
- Walmart’s exact Black listing showed unavailable when checked.
Verified specifications
| Material | modified PLA (“PLA 2”), black, 1.75 mm diameter, 1 kg nominal net filament per spool. |

Full research notes and sources
Which model this is
FilaCube PLA 2 (second-generation PLA), Black, 1.75 mm, 1 kg net per spool. It is not the older first-generation PLA, PLA+, high-temperature PLA, another color, or the 2, 3 or 5 kg rolls. Walmart lists the Black 1 kg version as item 604751756. FilaCube LLC states manufacture in Houston, Texas from globally sourced materials.
Temperature, bed and drying
The Black product page recommends an unheated bed or one below 40°C, while the general cheat sheet says unheated or below 50°C and community profiles land at 50–70°C. An archived maker case describes warping at a 70°C bed that stopped after lowering toward 60°C. Print-surface adhesion is machine-dependent, so import a community profile without changing the bed preset and the first layer may fail. Drying guidance also splits: about 50°C for 1–2 hours on the Black page, 60–80°C for 1–2 hours in the cheat sheet. Treat the higher figure as unverified for the delivered reel and use a temperature-controlled dryer.
Stringing, jams and tuning
Owner reports range from smooth prints at 220°C to severe stringing that tuning did not fix. A January 2024 owner reported smooth running at 220°C and jams below 215°C. Maker support documents a Black spool printing unevenly at 215°C that improved at 220°C, attributed to colorant. A 2022 Ender 3 owner found 6.5 mm retraction at 20 mm/s helped, but that is one Bowden setup, not a universal value; 5 mm retraction on a direct-drive extruder is too much. A February 2025 Bambu P1S user with maroon PLA 2 saw adhesion and blobbing; maroon is not black, so it speaks to the family needing tuning rather than to this color’s failure rate. No measured defect rate for Black spools exists.
Running costs
At the direct list price, material costs $0.02397 per gram: about $2.40 for a 100 g print and $5.99 for a 250 g print, before delivery, tax and failed prints. At 3 kg per year the raw material is $71.91 and at 12 kg per year $287.64, assuming $23.97 per roll and excluding shipping, taxes and waste. There is no required subscription or proprietary consumable. Electricity and drying energy cannot be estimated from the published temperatures alone.
Support and returns
FilaCube LLC publishes support@FilaCube.com and says replies usually come within 24 hours. No separate written warranty specifying coverage length or claim process was located. Keep purchase proof, packaging identifiers and print samples if a roll measures outside the ±0.03 mm tolerance.
Is it worth it?
At $18 or less delivered, the spool is a good buy. Between $19 and $24 delivered it is defensible when USA manufacture and brand consistency matter.
