Summary

The accessory-heavy version of FEIN’s 350 W corded oscillating multi-tool, sold with more than 30 blades, rasps, pads and an L-BOXX 136 case.

Strengths

  • Owner reports in the same family call the anti-vibration design the reason the tool stays comfortable and accurate in long sessions.
  • The StarlockPlus mount with QuickIN change opens up around 100 FEIN accessories in the Starlock and StarlockPlus classes.
  • An all-metal drive head and gearbox are rated by FEIN for high load and long service life.
  • FEIN publishes measured emission figures, which most competitors do not.
  • A spare-parts catalogue, a repair service and a 3-year registered warranty support the tool long-term.

Weaknesses

  • No instrumented test of this exact Top kit was found; Consumer Reports tested only the sibling kit, and its scores are paywalled.
  • FEIN dealers list the Top kit around $269.95 and Home Depot at $369.95, well above the bare tool’s $199.95 for the same motor.
  • Warranty claims require the whole tool with the original receipt, and a dismantled tool is not accepted.
  • Blades and sanding sheets are consumables, and owner complaints say the clamping pushes buyers toward FEIN-brand blades.
  • FEIN’s web page says 3.09 lb, while the manual’s EPTA figure is 3.2 lb (1.45 kg).

Noise, vibration and the measurements FEIN publishes

FEIN gives declared values rather than marketing claims: 75.6 dB(A) sound pressure, 83.6 dB(A) sound power, a 90.3 dB(C) peak and a three-axis vibration figure under 5 m/s² with 1.5 m/s² uncertainty. Those are declaration numbers for the family, but they are measured and published, which is more than most competitors do. Owners in the family repeatedly single out the anti-vibration behavior: one writes that it “doesn’t mess your wrists up and enables better accuracy,” and others describe the tool as cutting smoothly and quietly.

The kit is the purchase decision

The Top tier bundles an E-Cut Long-Life 10 mm blade, two 35 mm and two 65 mm E-Cut Long-Life blades, an E-Cut Carbide Pro 32 mm blade, a 75 mm HM saw blade, a triangular carbide rasp, a rigid scraper, a perforated sanding pad with 20 sheets across four grits, a dust extraction device and an L-BOXX 136 case. The bare MM 500 Plus ships one 44 mm blade and a case for roughly $70 less, so if you already own FEIN accessories the bare tool is the better buy, and if this is your first MultiMaster the bundle costs less than the blades bought separately. Consumables are the real running cost: blades, rasps, scrapers and sanding sheets all wear out and are sold separately, and third-party E-Cut Long-Life 10-packs exist for the family.

Maintenance, parts and support

Maintenance is simple but specific. After cutting gypsum-containing material, FEIN says to blow out the ventilation openings and the switch element with dry, oil-free compressed air, because gypsum dust can harden with humidity and impair the switching mechanism. Warranty is one year standard, extended to three years if the tool is registered within three months, and FEIN keeps a spare-parts catalogue and a repair service. The catch is that a claim needs the entire tool with the original receipt, and a partially or completely dismantled tool is not accepted.

Is it worth it?

Buy the MM 500 Plus Top when the accessory set or the L-BOXX matters, in the $200 to $270 band. At or below $200 it is a straightforward recommendation for interior work and renovation, since that is where the bare MM 500 Plus sits. From $201 to $270 the accessories justify the spread. Above about $270 the value thins out: Home Depot lists the Top at $369.95 and it was out of stock at the check, and at that price a 350 W corded tool competes with cordless StarlockMax-class machines and FEIN’s own MM 700 Max at $249.95.

Which model this is

This is the corded MULTIMASTER MM 500 Plus Top, US order number 72296770090; FEIN lists the same tool in the EU as 72296770000 and a 110 V UK version as 72296770241. The Top tier is an accessory and case package, not a different motor: the bare MM 500 Plus (72296769090) has the same 350 W, 10,000–19,500 opm and 3.09 lb spec block. The current 72296770090 replaced 72296761090, and the only documented change is the case, now an L-BOXX. Do not confuse it with the cordless AMM 500 Plus Top (18 V) or the MM 700 Max.
