Summary

A corded 120 V oscillating multi-tool built around FEIN’s decoupled motor and StarlockPlus mount, sold in several accessory tiers as the FMM 350 QSL. Check the generation before you buy: FEIN has moved its US catalogue to the MM 500 and MM 700, so this tool is dealer stock now and its best independent test data is from 2018.

Strengths

  • Vibration control scored 10.0/10 and topped a roughly 25-tool shootout, thanks to a decoupled, self-supporting motor.
  • QuickIN blade changes scored 10.0/10 and let you eject a hot blade without touching it.
  • Build uses a metal gear case with ball and needle bearings and high-copper windings.
  • The 16.4 ft cord removes battery downtime and platform lock-in.
  • FEIN publishes repair instructions and sells the common wear parts in the US.
  • Long-term owners report 20+ years of occasional use and daily install work.

Weaknesses

  • Cutting speed is its weakest axis: 7.7/10 and a 25.8 s pine plunge cut, near the bottom of the 2018 group.
  • Measured cutting noise was 98 dB(A), high enough that hearing protection is realistic indoors.
  • No LED light, which the reviewers wanted for dark cavities.
  • Superseded generation: FEIN’s US catalogue now lists the MM 300, MM 500 and MM 700, not this tool.
  • The vibration lead FEIN once held alone is gone; 2026 testing shows Makita and Bosch matching or beating it.
  • Dealer stock runs $269–$297 for kits, above the current MM 500 Plus at $199.95.

Vibration, blades and how it feels

The FMM 350 QSL’s headline strength is smoothness. The same test gave the StarlockPlus mount and QuickIN clamp 10.0/10 on blade change, including the practical ability to eject a blade over 200°F without touching it. Owners on woodworking and tool forums back the feel, calling FEIN multi-tools smoother and quieter than the Bosch, Makita and DeWalt tools they compare against.

Cutting speed and noise

Speed is where it does not win. There is no LED light either, the one feature the reviewers wanted added for plumbers in dark cavities.

Kits, generations and what to check

“Top”, “QuickStart”, “Start Q” and “Top Plus” are accessory tiers of the same 350 W tool, not different motors. Kit contents differ a lot: the Top kit adds a perforated backing pad, a 4-1/2 in perforated disc with extra sheets, a dust extraction assembly, a rigid scraper, more E-Cut blades including a 2-9/16 in blade, HSS and carbide segment blades, a triangular carbide rasp and a tool case, while lower tiers carry a nylon bag or a hard case. The order number 72295264090 now also appears on the renamed MM 500 Start platform, so a SKU alone does not prove you are buying an FMM 350 QSL.

Repairs and running costs

Repairability is a real selling point. FEIN publishes repair instructions for both FMM350Q and FMM350QSL with online exploded views, the US speed-control switch (30762412990) is sold as an OEM part with owner-level instructions rated easy, and carbon brushes (30711157000) are available for both 110 V and 240 V versions. FEIN excludes carbon brushes and armatures from warranty as wear parts, and a partly dismantled tool cannot be submitted for warranty, so plan your repair accordingly. The recurring cost is consumables: E-Cut saw blades, segment and carbide blades, sanding sheets and rasps. StarlockPlus accepts FEIN, Bosch and third-party accessories, which keeps blade pricing competitive, and there is no battery lock-in on a corded tool.

Is it worth it?

Dealer listings for this kit run $269.00 for the QuickStart and $297.46 for the Start Q, while the current-generation MM 500 Plus MultiMaster Start lists at $199.95 and the corded MM 700 series starts at $280. Under roughly $200 with a rich accessory kit, ideally a Top or Top Plus tier with the hard case, dust extraction, round disc and carbide rasp, it is good value and arguably better than the entry MM 500 Plus; older tests quoted $350 for the Top kit and $199 for a basic set. Between $200 and $270 you are paying corded-incumbent money for a superseded design, and above $270 the MM 700 or a current cordless pro tool is the better buy. If you already own one, keep and repair it: the parts most likely to fail are individually available and the vibration performance remains top of the class.
